: LLY excessive smoke and severe miss.
Gray Max 03-24-2005, 10:02 PM Truck has 100 miles on it. Driving and started feeling a slight miss in the engine. By another 2 miles would barely pull itself down the road. Excessive blue smoke and knock in the engine with no SES light. The truck has the cat removed and had a blocker plate which was removed before I tow it to the dealer in the morning. Drove it after plate was removed with no change. I never have installed the finger stick ot any type of programmer as it is 1 day old. I need help as this truck is how I eat.
partsguy662 03-24-2005, 10:05 PM Bad load of fuel, perhaps?
Gray Max 03-24-2005, 10:07 PM I was thinking that but it has only been filled once at the dealer. It was way low when it was filled and I would think it would have started sooner than 100 miles. This was also my first thought.
dmaxalliTech 03-24-2005, 10:09 PM did they put gas in it?
IBDMAX'IN 03-24-2005, 10:11 PM Blue smoke ain't good. sounds like oil is somehow getting into your intake. You might wanna check your oil, if one of your injector cups came loose and filled your crank case with diesel then the oil and diesel could have a chance of bubbling through the PCV breather into the intake. Just a wild guess but might be worth looking into.
Gray Max 03-24-2005, 10:12 PM Glad to see you on here Eric. I was with the salesmen when he filled it up but I didn't get out of the truck. I have driven 90 or so miles and I don't think it would run that long. Smoke is blue to almost white at idle as well as attempting to accelerate. Any ideas???
IBDMAX'IN 03-24-2005, 10:18 PM Eric, what do you think of my cockeyed idea, is this possible???
Gray Max 03-24-2005, 10:26 PM I checked the oil and it looked OK best I could tell as it was dark. The smoke is almost white with a little blue, but it is hard to see after dark. Lookes like a gas running when it is cold. It also seemed to puff out heavier in spurts at idle like it was a single cylinder having a problem. I'm thinking a bad injector.
IBDMAX'IN 03-24-2005, 10:29 PM That would be my guess, too bad you don't have a tech2 you could check your balance rates. I would think it's either an injector or an injector cup.
IBDMAX'IN 03-24-2005, 10:31 PM Actually if it's puffing white steam looking stuff it could be an injector cup leaking because that could also put antifreeze into the mix which is what it sounds like from the discription.
Gray Max 03-24-2005, 10:35 PM It is white smoke and doesn't really look like steam as it does not go away it just clouds up. Sounds like a week of the truck sitting at the dealer to me. I guess it's Romen noodles for me.
IBDMAX'IN 03-24-2005, 10:52 PM Tell them to give you another truck!!! Or have them give you a loaner that you can trash and bash.
If that don't work I have some top romen and cup o noodles that I could donate to your cause.
dmaxalliTech 03-24-2005, 11:53 PM Wade, injector cups are no such thing on an LLY.
Injector problem is possible though. Overfull on oil?(not fuel in oil, just overfull) hard to say with out seeing it.
Gray Max 03-25-2005, 06:37 AM Truck goes in to the dealer in an hour so I guess we will se what the " Diesel tech" says. The oil is above the full mark but I didn't look up on the stick very far. I will check it out. I'll let you know what I find out.
mikegolfmc 03-25-2005, 06:41 AM this problem occurred on mine at about 10000. they did a reflash and all is fine now. it is unburnt fuel from and injector that is not breaking properly.
NCMIC 03-25-2005, 07:58 AM i would say bad fuel. mine took a bit bfore it happened after I filled at a BP one day. i would say, try throwing in some stanadyne or some other additive and see how it performs. if it gets better, replace the fuel filter as the bad fuel can cause waxing of it.
you can let the dealer look at it, as there are no codes, they may drop the tank in order to purge the fuel system. they may even put a tech2 and check the balancing of the injectors. but before that headache, i would just try an additive to see if it gets better. i think power service is readily available but you might want to try stanadyne. that's what cured mine.
Gray Max 03-25-2005, 09:52 AM Just talked to the tech and he said he found the 2 EGR codes which I expected and 2 injector codes. When I unloaded the truck this morning it ran fine for about 500 ft and then started missing and smoking again. As the truck runs it gets worse to the point that it won't run over about 30mph with it floored. I guess he is still trying stuff trying to avoid pulling injectors. Anyone know the availability of LLY injectors. Friend just had LB7 injectors put in and it took almost 2 weeks to get them.
Gray Max 03-25-2005, 12:32 PM Dealer called and says it is the injector control modual. I've never seen this mentioned before so maybe I'm starting something new. It is not shipped from GM so they don't know how long it will take to get. They have a request for overnight which would get it here Monday, but they don't think that is a very likely. I guess this is better than injectors, but still a real PITA.
