I have a oil temp guage that I'm going to install in my truck it's a 140-300 deg temp guage

Should I install it to monitor the engine oil temp or the rear end oil temp (the truck's not mine) :(

I have a mag-tec rear end cover which already has a 1/8" npt hole tapped in it so install would be easy,;) I do some towing but not a lot so rear temp could be important (again the truck's not mine):(

If I install it to moniter the engine oil temp where would be a good place to mount the sending unit? At the filter area where there are a few extra plug's? Are they NPT fitting's?
Would that spot give a good reading point, or would it always read cold or hot or is it a true indication of oil temp?
If not there then where else could I mount the sending unit on the engine and get a good reading?
Drill a hole in the engine oil pan?

Any one have any idea's

Thx

Unless you are towing heavy and regularly I don't believe rear end temp is a concern. I think there is more value in monitoring engine oil temp due to the fact that engine oil plays a large part in cooling the lower parts of the engine and returning this heat to the pan. If you want to measure engine oil temp at the filter housing you'll need a 3/8"NPT male thread to 1/8"NPT female adaptor bushing (1 piece). I used stainless when I installed my OPS for my lift pump, some have had oil leak problems with the brass fittings due to heat.
