: 96+ K&N on a 94!

I recently acquired one of the round barrel style K&N air filters (courtesy of Adam Stein, thanks!) and I've been trying to figure out what I needed to buy to make it work on my '94 since it takes the old square filters. Well, guess what, I don't need to buy anything! Turns out that the round filter fits perfectly where the old airbox used to mount up! Looks cool, and WHOA! you should hear the whistle this baby makes now! I also got my new downpipe in thanks to w_huisman (thanks Wade!) and I'm gonna try and get that put in this weekend too. I'm going to attempt to get that put in this weekend, and hopefully get some pics/vids up too! sweet!

I just did mine too but I put a 12" 90* mandrel bent 3" pipe between the boot and cone filter, cut a 8" x 8" opening where the plastic oem piece is below the passenger battery used to be. It's now where the airbox was.

Mine has always had a pronounced whistle, bottomend, and a jetroar above 15 psi.

QM, Could you post a pic of the top view. I just want to see what you used and what mods were involved. Is this on the 93? I hope so.

It's funny you guys should mention K&N filters. I was contemplating ditching mine (square one for stock airbox) and either going back to OEM or getting an amsoil or other one. The talk about K&N filters kind of scares me.

But I'll probably just leave the K&N. I got enough things to do to the truck as it is (new glows, leaky oil filter adaptor, new crossover, speed sensors on the tranny, optic bump again, etc...).

The sad part is, my truck is just gonna collect dust in the garage till I get around to doing all this stuff, and that's not going to happen for another 3 weeks. :(

I'll quit whining now.:bawl:

I've seen it before. this is my version.

**Note to anyone who's bumped the optic. I scanned max fuel request at 75% app and it slightly went down from there. That means WOT is ~75% pedal on my truck.

QM,
Thanks but what is the red hose for / goto / from?

That's the heater hose, just replaced it today.

Guess what will happen to that filter in that location in rain - not even to mention a driving rain - with any forward vehicle movement?

A water baffle\shield is required

I'll report back on that, it looks like it's mostly blocked by the front grill's lower lens, same as stock airbox pickup.

Looking forward to posting new IAT's and boost psi's with this audi 5000 IC, tho.

Be neat if you could post Temps before and after cooler. also pressure before and after. Now would be a good time to hook up a watermister in front of the cooler to help in chilling it. Spray on the fins not in it. Have it hooked to boost sensor to conserve water. You could use boost pressure to "pump" it.

Here's mine...Yeah, yeah, I'm going to clean it tomorrow,I just wanted to see if it would fit.

With a little help you could sheild (box) it into the fenderwell airstream, or remove the duct that diverts the air to the fender for more air where the cone is now. or if you got in a modifying mood, put the battery where the airbox was and turn that rubber boot to where the aircone is pointing down where the battery was, and open it up for more air.

Talk about how you could use boost pressure to pump it, DP.

What is the diameter of the inlet to the air filter for the '96 cone fliter? If you could use another 90° elbow and put the filter right where the old air box was and put a shield around it, that is what I would like to do. Diesel Guy did you notice a difference with the new filter, Power, Milage, Noise?
Does any one use a bigger filter for their diesel? Where did you get it, how much was it?

boisebiker,

Per K&N for the E-1796 Product Specifications 97 GMC 6.5 Filter
Flange Inside Diameter: 3.75 in (95 mm)

Mine's a 97 so it came stock with the round filter.

With the ambient temp probes i've done the factory hole in the fender had the best air intake temps of anywhere, also the smallest flow area was all greater than 3.5". Running the filter as QM has done is probably giving him the same air as the factory hole in the fender, only difference would be as suggested by GMCTD, water/rain etc from that location, if it were in the stock location all that stuff should have time to drop out before hitting the filter.

I still have a free tuna can, i see your can-less... lol

Hows that puppy running anyways, no more surging?

And that's still very good data for using the fender as the air duct, CR - the insulated pad ensures frontal cool air reaches the air box, with no extra ducting clutter in the engine compartment.

I still have my ducting removed from below the battery box from when i did my measurements but it WILL be going back in place when i start tearing this thing down.

[Texas] Diesel Guy did you notice a difference with the new filter, Power, Milage, Noise?
Noise, if you categorized the sound of the turbo spooling as noise, then yes, its noticeably noisier. Power, can't really say if I gained anything but I definitely didn't lose anything but it sure sounds like she's running good ;) Mileage we'll have to see, its only been on there for less than 24hrs.

TDG, I still have a free tuna can, i see your can-less... lol Hows that puppy running anyways, no more surging?
I'll pass on the tuna can for now, I'm really pleased with this setup, I used a full can of degreaser to get rid of the mess from the breathers, now this baby shines and I am of the impression that unregulated crankcase vacuum will help keep it that way.

She's still not running 100%, I'm going to play with the optic some more....

This is all new to me but shouldn't that filter be somehow seperated or enclosed from the hot air that is produced in the engine compartment?

Yes to get maximum benefit, incoming air should be as cool as possible and not heated underhood air

For the summer months, I might rig something up, but right now I can't get coolant temps even to 190, and this truck doesn't run right til she gets warm, so I'll keep it this way for now.

I wonder if these guys sell the elbow piece separately? They claim its a "COLD AIR" intake system...please, 50% less restriction? Wow, they must have some real genius working for them....

I drove over 700 miles in the last few days, one day of straight rain. Happy to report that the air filter remained dry and unsoiled behind the grill.:D

Texas Diesel Guy

The 'van' guys out there will be upset to hear that. Their Air box draws air right under the front of the hood, Drive in the rain once, filter gets soaked.

On a side note, I sold my old air box/filter already on Ebay, got $30 bucks for it!
Anybody want a stock downpipe?? ;)

Any one got an old filter for the 96 an newer that I can play with? I would like to retrofit my 95 with the newer/larger filter. Any one heard of a FRONT MOUNT INTERCOOLER INTAKE? Check out this auction on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7965047133&category=33659
I bet we can do better.
