found a truck, looks good in pictures - paint shines, just a light rust on frame, but not rotted he claims, several scrapes and dings. spec'd about how i want. '96, sierra 2500, 4x4, ext cab, says no rust, brand new crate engine (waiting to find out how brand new, and he specifically said not rebuilt but crate), new IP, "newer" transmission, only expection is the leather interior, i like th egray custom cloth. hoping to get bench seat re-upholstered. $5,000. he wrote back - 319k. says i won't be dissappointed for the money - i gulp'd when i saw the miles. is that just too darn many miles? iuf it will treat me well for the next 10-15k, after that, i wouldn't mind dropping some cash into it.
the engine costs more than the $5k. i owned a '95 6.5l and '00 5.7l new. they were my favorite trucks. what should i expect out of an expected to be well maintained truck w/319k?
i am sure that there are a few of these out there w/300k on them.
of course i would do the necessary mod's and cooling mod's.

The one thing about that many miles is most wear parts have been replaced. I'd look the front suspension and steering over close.Jack the wheels off the ground and check ball joints ,wheel bearings and cv shafts for wear. Look above the inner lip of the front fenders for rust. Also look above the rear wheel wells for rust. Insist on documentation on the engine and trans. With that many miles it won't be trouble free but could be tollerable. Sounds like he spent the big bucks on the major parts. Allways offer less than asking price. You can allways come up. With that many miles he probbly isn't getting alot of offers

I won't buy anything with more than 200K (except for semis)

At least not for $5K. $1000-$1500 maybe...

If it is a "crate" engine, it is gonna come with a new IP.

I'd call it bogus unless I saw receipts. Even then, 5K is alot. $2500, I'd buy, but I'd walk at $5k.

I had 380,000 km on my last truck and it still drove well and wasn't worn out. Just wanted a crew cab. The next owner called me a year or so after he bought cause he wanted some information on the engine as he was going to rebuid it. He had put another 80,000 km on it and was doing the engine as he figured it was still worth keeping.

If its a crate engine I'd say thats great. A newer tranny I'd be curious as to how much "newer" it is. But I'll agree with everybody else, yeah the engine is new and whatnot, but at that kind of mileage, its not worth it unless he really lowered the price. I'd say AT MOST offer $2500

good luck

My first question to the seller would be. After investing that kinda money why are you selling it? After that I would look over the complete drive train. To me it sounds like the seller didn’t have a problem putting money into his vehicle. It has probably been well maintained but who knows without inspecting it. There have been other 6.5 without the reworks listed for the same and even more money. As with any used purchase you take a chance and sometimes you win and others you pay.
