Went to an Allison Transmission repair place to buy Transynd. Cost $50 per gallon. Went to GMC dealer to buy an Allison Tranny gasket, they said $50.00. Is this a conspiracy. Why should a pan gasket cost $50 and where can I get Transynd in a 5 gal bucket from a local place so won't go broke getting it shipped? FYI The pan gasket is re-usable unless it was damaged somehow when the pan was removed.

But if you remove the pan, reinstall with expensive fluid, and it leaks, then your SOL. And if you damage it during removal, then one needs to call a neighbor to go get one. So thought it prudent to just buy one. But at $50, could the dealer have made a mistake? I hope.

I haven't priced the gasket, but I paid about half that much for the Transynd at an Allison dealer here in Jville. IIRC I paid about $23 a gallon for the Transynd, $8 for Ally filter, and $45 for the deep pan. Might be a good idea to shop around. JJ :)

nope, its expensive. The gasket is a metal/rubber deal. Most dealers I dont even think stock em. I have had my pan off numerous times and havent screwed it up. I wouldnt worry about that.
I also run mobil 1 synthetic ATF and really like it. I have seen it take some **** that still boggles my mind that it stayed red. Its good stuff IMO

Try Johnson & Towers Allison in Beltsville (301)937-8700. When I was in Elkton, they had great prices and service and shipped stuff to me practically overnight. The gasket is a very substantial piece of rubber that's actually molded and not a flat sheet. I've had mine off at least three times now and unless you have wild Wolverines roaming in your garage or try to reinstall like a NASCAR pit crew with a blindfold you should never need a replacement gasket.

While asking at each auto parts store, a customer said Keller Trucking in Waldorf Md (50 miles) had the Transynd. So I called and they had one bucket left for $164.15. So I drove the 50 miles to get it. When I got there, discovered it was BP Autran Syn 295, which is one of the Allison approved sources. It is now in the garage and am going to order the internal filter and spin on filter so can do the complete job once and for all. Thanks for all the help.

Are you changing pan sizes? If you aren't you do not need the internal filter. The internal filter is the fluid pickup for the pump and only has a screen in it for filtering. Unless you are doing a complete rebuild for a massive failure or changing pans (which would necessitate a longer or shorter pickup tube) the internal filter does not require changing.

I read the procedures form Eric Merchant and he talks about removing the pan and replacing the filter. I just thought...maybe didn't think, but it is a moot point now, as I already ordered the shallow pan filter, the spin on filter, one air cleaner and one fuel filter from GM DieselTech just before I checked this.
