Have had straight pipe on last two trucks. Cummins and now LMM, and never any issues. As long as you are not Disturbing the peace, you should be fine.

I got a 4" down and back no kitty no muff. 7" tip dumped just before the rear tire. Got a ticket last month for disturbing the peace. It's louder outside but inside with the windows up and the radio on it isn't that bad. When im passing cars on the street it sounds like the wall camera from a nascar race.

I have been pulled over three times in two months. One cop turned around to follow me only because of the loudness.......of course I did manage to burn rubber through the first three gears.....:)

I love the sound of mine. Its so quiet inside that I usually keep a passanger side window cracked just so I can hear it. It is pretty loud at idle, so I am sure people in parking lots are bothered by it but I am all about loud exhaust.
As long as you dont go racing from stop light to stop light all the time you should be fine, just be cautious of your location.

I first added a Flowmaster muffler (removed the factory) about 6 years ago and then about 4 years ago I added a Y pipe before the muffler and straight pipe the new side.

Never had an issue with the law.

I have the ANSA silverline exhaust with a "muffler" that you can see straight through. How do you think that compares to a straight pipe?

does going to a straight pipe on stock exhaust help at all with the EGTs??

chasin300
12-10-2008, 08:05 AM
Ive never used stock exhaust, I have 4" on my 02 and 5" on my 03, but a friend of mine has an 02 with stock sized exhaust cause he wont buy aftermarket exhaust cause its a "waste of money" till his goes bad, but he cut his muffler out and he claims that it lowered his temp at the manifold bout 200* when towing his backhoe around. But thats his claim.

I have teh same muffler. mine was straight piped for a while (did it the cheap way, unbolted it right before the stcok muffler and stopped there, made the cab resonate pretty bad) then i took Silverlines down pipe and put the muffler right on the end of that and added a bit of tube the put a 6" down turn tip. To me it quited the sound of the motor out the exhaust but it still had jsut as much whistle.

Its kinda cool cause in my cab with the radio down and the windows up all it sounds like an 8.1L but as soon as you drop the windows all you hear is whistle and then some motor when you hit the higher RPMs

4'' turbo back straight pipe here. been pulled over plenty of times but never heard anything about being too loud. its pretty quiet in the cab but when you put the windows down it sure seems loud. it can set off car alarms pretty easy.

Did anyone notice a change in power when going to a straight pipe? Any loss in torque?

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

 I just dropped mine off in the shop to put a magnaflow on mine (got a ticket) I'll see if I can notice any power difference but I'm probably going to right back to straight pipe. The shop told me their going to have to cut my 7" tip off

All I have to say is. The hell with a muffler. I bought my truck with a magnaflow catback. So I just removed the muffler and installed the sraight pipe. It sounds great. Not as loud as I thought it would be.

My 01 is stock size straight back. Never had a prob "kock on wood". It is a little loud but I don't voice it in town unless one of those clowns with the 150 DB radio BS is next to me. Then I'll let her set and talk a bit just to equal things out:D
