: levels of upgrades?
Stove 03-23-2005, 09:17 PM Sig is not updated yet! New truck is 05 ECSB 4x4 dmax/ally.
I have been reading here for some time, but all of the different tranny upgrades are overwhelming. Then with the big pi$$ing match going on, I'm not real sure what is what. Don't get me wrong, the severe competition is good it will push the envelope farther.:ro) Plus all the hell raising is funny!!
So we have SC, ***, DTT, who knows what the hell all of these mean, and which posters belong to what companies. With the dmax growing in sales and new members of the family coming aboard, I think that we need to rehash some of the available upgrading options-mild to wild.
For instance, what HP increase can the stock ally take without longevity issues? 50,65,75 what.
Seen stuff about transgo??
I know that most of you guys addicted to drugs-stacking, N20, LPG have some complete unit installed, but what about us that want a little HP increase without major tranny upgrades.
We new guys just need some non-technical input. I have been to chicken to post here till I got my flame suit on):h . I'm ready, let her rip. Oh yea I have been searching and reading for days, but this area of our trucks seems to change the fastest.
later:D

You can take advice from three groups of people.
The Manufacturer
The Installer/builder
The end user/customer
Find out what your looking for the truck to do. You wanna race or tow? Look at whats avail and then you will get a better idea on what you wanna do.
Best option? Look here (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=41) and pour some soda and a bag of popcorn... That seems to be the 'readers choice' for forum reading..LOL
coyotekid 03-23-2005, 10:41 PM You better wait until infinity, because something new and improved comes out nearly every day to make our our Allisons obsolete!
Alli's are worse than computers!
Seriously though, I've done a lot of research on the issue, and I've come to the conclusion that each of the major manufacturers can provide quality parts...it's the installation I'd worry about.
It's kinda like the whole Line-X vs. Rhino liner debate in my book: It's not as important which brand you go with as it is finding an experienced, competent installer.
And we certainly have some excellent installers that frequent this board.

I am going to work-farm, plow snow, pull car haulers loaded with produce, most of the time bed is loaded. Add a little playing in with work, but primarily work. I know that lots of these guys are running big HP numbers and need major upgrades. What I am looking for is the lower end of the HP spectrum.
I have already figured out that there are 3 points of view. Just trying to figure out who is who. Lots of reading, and competition.:ro)
thanks

Funny it is the same thing in the produce business. Everybody has the best quality and best taste and shelf life, but the end user is the real test.
Maybe we need a techincal tranny forum well the builders can really raise hell.
Slick 03-24-2005, 08:43 AM Stove, try to find the post by Mike L. in the Suncoast Level 4 inprovement thread, it was good info. for people not wanting to push the limits.
Bottom line transgo and a quality converter from one of the big companies is all most will ever need.
StraitDiesel 03-24-2005, 09:12 AM Stove,
Like Slick said, an upgraded converter and transgo shift kit will do you just fine... and if you are mechanically inclined, you can probably do the install yourself. Check the do-it-yourself section for Dmaxallitech's DIY article on the transgo.

ratlover 03-24-2005, 12:29 PM What they said. Self install can be a MF though depending. The allison is a heavy SOB, you need a way to get it in/out and work on it.
Pretty much everybody but smoop and stefan and bill k are users, they are or work for the manufacturer. Dmaxallitech and Mike L are installers and will sell you what ever kit you want. Mike L said it best. For just a guy thats going to work his stuff and maybe run a moderat program(like a hot juice or the like) then a transgo and a good converter is a good choice. There have been a few guys that ran the dog piss outa that combo with good results. But you may want new clutches depending how abused your stuff is so a stge 2 suncoast or the like may be what you want.
Stove 03-24-2005, 01:04 PM thanks for the replies.
I know understand some of the posts better since I know who is what!!
Seems like I should look at transgo and converters.
I'll keep reading and enjoying.
