: Smog Checks on Diesels in CA
kmo058 03-23-2005, 06:24 PM Heard that CA may start smog testing diesels in CA. Is this true & if so has anybody heard of an aftermarket 4" exhaust that you can bolt & unbolt the cat? Will this create any trouble codes, problems, etc? Thanks in advance for any info.
OC_DMAX 03-23-2005, 06:29 PM There has been no smog test required to date.
What is your source for the possiblity of testing in the future? (Possibly the CARB website?)
The emission requirements for diesels get significantly tighter starting in Jan, 2007. Some form of active exhaust treatment is "potentially envisioned" for 2007 vehicles and beyond. Maybe the inspections will start after this time? It would not surprise me if some sort of test is required in CA after this date.
There are a number of exhaust systems sold that have a pipe that replaces the CAT converter. TTS has one and I have read about aftermarket manufactures that offer similar devices.
kmo058 03-23-2005, 07:17 PM Spoke with aftermarket shop from E-bay and he asked me if I had a cat on the truck when I asked about aftermarket exhaust. He told me about possible smog checks in '07 & he was from N.C.
OC_DMAX 03-23-2005, 07:35 PM For the LB7 engine (and equipped with a CAT, as in the 2002-2004 California models), you can remove the CAT and not throw any codes or light the SES light. The engine controller and OBDII diagnostics are very forgiving and do not care.
If you have an LLY engine (and they all have a CAT), you may run into some issues by removing the stock muffler and the CAT. If this is your situation, go to the LLY portion of the forum and read what others with this engine have written. Some people have had problems with codes being produced (and some CA trucks have the SES light coming on).
Good luck,
Alan
M1Garand 03-24-2005, 11:01 AM I don't know if CA is going to test all diesel emissions, but I work for the UPRR and I just read a memo that CA has told the railroad that the commercial diesel trucks used by all the maintenance and track gangs will only be allowed to sit and idle at job sites for 5 minutes before having to shut down the motors. Some new regulations must be in the works.

radvans 03-24-2005, 11:38 AM If diesel's were exempt before how can they begin testing them now? Are they expect the buyer to purchase additional aftermarket equipment to past a test that the vechicle couldn't pass when purchased new?
I would think that if you were exempt in the past you would be exempt in the future.
Mark_my_word 03-24-2005, 12:04 PM I'm in Socal. They will start smog checking in 2007. What I'm thinking is that they will probably set it up so that you have to meet a standard for the year of your truck. Mine is a 2005 so I would not be smogged for the strict 2007 standard. Still, I have no cat, so under this scenario I would probably fail the smog because
I would not meet emissions for a factory equipped 2005. Now, if the smog is every 2 years like it is for gassers it might be worth it to add and remove the cat for the smog.
I'm hoping that they just start smogging for year 2007 trucks on but knowing the way things are in California I doubt that will be the case.
OC_DMAX 03-24-2005, 12:06 PM M1Carand - The railroad locomotives are one of the last large polluting devices in the SoCal basin. I think you will be seeing some dramatic changes in what UP and BNSF will be using for engines over the next 5 years.
Terrain Twister 03-24-2005, 12:42 PM MMW,
Where did you get the info that will will start testing in '07? If so, removing it every two years may not work. In my area they will set up road side smog checks and randomly pull people over and test.

It covers alot.... can you give us a hint where to look?
56Nomad 03-24-2005, 11:28 PM Boy am I gunna have fun when the State starts to stick probes
in my exhaust. I have a 2002, legally registered in California.....
but I bought it in Texas with no EGR or Cat Conv.
In 2002, Duramax diesels in California all had to have EGR and Cat Conv.
and they were the only state that required it.
See what they started

That is interesting...... but what does it have to do with
smog checks

That went into effect Jan 1 2005. I beleive it states that nothing may idle for more than 5 mins. Period. At least that is how my trucker buddy reads it.

The idle restriction is for com'l vehicles of GVWR => 10,000#s. Donno if the CHP would wanna sit 5mins w/stopwatch for enfraction. Would be prudent not to idle too long near donut shops tho ~
56Normad ~ its initially registered. Inspection is not a registration issue. You're grandfathered. No sweat ~ not responsible for DMV incompetence.

Glad I don't live in California.
P.S. Would they cite vehicles (ex. tourists) from out of state for noise. Even if I am legal in Texas. BTW, in Texas a turbo is considered a muffler. :ro)

They don't even cite the illegal Mexicans who drive here...... so come
visit and don't worry about a thing!
drhutch 03-25-2005, 02:56 PM They have been doing emission test for years in the front range area of Colorado. New cars get a 5 year exemption and older cars are every 2 years. Diesel pickups have to get inspected EVERY year , at twice the price of a gasser, what a rip.

Time to move to Cali :ro)
WOJO 1 03-25-2005, 05:02 PM Heck, you guys have it made. I have an 02' and have had to smog it already. Anything under 10,000# in this part of Nevada requires smog inspection. Yearly.

Man.... I hope CARB doesn't find out about this money maker :badidea:
(California Air Resources Board)
ShumDit 03-25-2005, 08:21 PM CO has followed CA clean air stds for yrs ~ so we know they're talking. Now they're getting ahead of the game. Its been said that many are former Californians. So ~ whats the chances CARB won't notice ?
fannypack 04-02-2005, 02:57 AM Speaking of noise, how about all of these HD motorcycles with straight pipes? Come on, what doesn't the CHP pull them over? Chicken?

Hey fannypack...... Speaking about Harleys, is that a hog in your avitar pic. ?

McRat 04-02-2005, 02:32 PM And what is this "turbocharger is not a muffler" BS. ;)
Why else would you turbo a motor, except to make the noise nazis happy? :D
