I was trying to remove engine with the tranny because crank broke but couldn't get the transfer case to clear the cross member that the front toursion bars are hooked to. How do you get them unhooked so I can remove cross member without pulling transfer case?

If your just planning on replacing the crank or swapping engines, your much better off leaving the transmission as is.

X2. Much easier to pull just the motor than it is to try and pull both.

Pulling torsion bars can get kinda ugly. According to "the book" the front end has to damn near be pulled off. You can unbolt the transfer case from the trans. only only six bolts. Just one of them is a b**ch to get to. I know cause I'm in the middle of pulling my transfer case and trans to inspect my clutch.

Pull the engine alone. Leave every thing else in place.Unnecessary time & effort spent.

The top bolt on the T-case is difficult. Support the trans with a jack, unbolt and remove the trans. cross member then slowly lower the trans until the t-case is resting on the torsionbar cross member. This will allow easier access to the top t-case bolt. Just be sure to do this bolt first, not last.
I agree with others, just pull the engine and not the rest of it. The upper bellhousing bolts are easier to remove using the same method as described for the t-case bolt. The angle of the engine just allows more room.
If you DO use this technique, ensure there is no interference between the engine fan and the rad if still installed.

If going the engine/trans route you need to support tranfer case after disconnected. I've been thinking of taking engine/trans/transfer case as one on a 93 that i'm parting out. I'm removing the front clip before pulling.I'll know by sunday if it will come out that way. I'm doing it to save dumping all that atf all over the floor.

There isn't THAT much atf in the t-case.
About 3 liters IIRC.

The reason I couldn't pull just the engine was because I couldn't turn the motor over to get the 6 tourque converter bolts out. What I ended up doing was pulling transfer case then transmission without converter, then using an offset end wrench to remove 6 bolts in converter. The engine is junk so i was leaving it in frame. The tranny is new and being sold so I didn't want to hurt converter. Thanks for the info on the toursion bars and the front end.
