: Can injection pump be rebuilt?
saskpuller 03-23-2005, 04:25 PM Just had the injection pump replaced and was wondering what to do with the old one. Can it be rebuilt or is that not worth it? The shop that did it for me has about a dozen pumps sitting there. Anyone interested? Offers?
quantum mechanic 03-23-2005, 04:47 PM What was it doing to cause it's replacement?
steiner43511 03-23-2005, 05:01 PM ill give ya $5.00 for it!
shakmobil 03-23-2005, 05:37 PM eBay has a constant supply of them, the usual price is $30-$50. Sometimes they come with the bonus - PMD :)
saskpuller 03-24-2005, 12:07 AM Many things it was doing. First it would stall when idling both a 750 and 1170rpm. Only occasionly would that happen. Poor fuel economy. The tech where I took it told me the code came up that it was pump shutdown. Ironically the truck stalled three times on the way to his shop. Once when slowing for a stop sign and twice when on the pedal hard. Hopefully that fixes the problems. I am keeping the PMD off the old pump as a spare. I did have him move the PMD to remote location since everthing was apart.
Ok, five bucks but you pay the shipping. Are you serious that E-bay has these pumps for $30-50. They are probably in the same condition as mine (and the dozen on the tech's shelf)
quantum mechanic 03-24-2005, 08:10 AM Does the old PMD work or have you tried it? Fuel shut down? is that the ESO?
saskpuller 03-24-2005, 10:38 AM Haven't tried the old PMD however will keep for a spare. ESO condtion unknown. All I know is that the pump code came up. Wasn't me that did the test.
quantum mechanic 03-24-2005, 12:20 PM Hmmm.. I was looking to piece it together, if it threw a "pump code" most likely the F sol or optical. Unless you can get the parts for free, it would cost too much to rebuild it.
Texas Diesel Guy 03-24-2005, 07:05 PM What Model # is it? (DS4 831 - XXXX)
It may or may not even be worth rebuilding, depending on your criteria, we can buy 5521s (latest p/n) for about 30 bucks all day. If you've got a 5067, even if it were in decent shape, it wouldn't make sense to build it. Too many updates would have to be applied on top of the wear and tear replacement parts to get it up to snuff.
knkreb 03-24-2005, 08:40 PM Any way to check an optical off the pump with a multimeter at all? I've got a dead pump downstairs. Wondering if I could piece it back together with a new optical off of possible dud from that fantabulous auction site.

If it were in a truck, you could just unplug the optical and see if it starts. If it won't start plugged in and will start unplugged that's a strong indication that the pump is fine and the optical is bad. On a scanner the fuel pump angle (25-30 degs) will be at 60-90* timing will be 0.0

Where did the Diesel Tech mount your new FSD/PMD? I hope not on the intake???
Texas Diesel Guy 03-24-2005, 09:00 PM ....I'm sure you could put it back together and make it look like a pump, but that is obviously not the preferred method.
Need a test stand to properly test the optic, ECM would be second option, multimeter is out of the question.
knkreb 03-24-2005, 10:14 PM What 'xactly is the optic anyway? An LED emitter and receiver or CAD cell of some sort in conjunction with the data wheel? What is it that fails in those critters anyway? Is it something that is visibly defective?
There is an ice machine manufacturer that uses an LED emitter and reciever setup to sense ice level in the bin. Once the beam is broken, it shuts off the machine. I was wondering if it was similar in nature or not?
DieselPro 03-24-2005, 10:18 PM I know the optic sensor in the DS pump will shut the engine down if it sees ice also.

When picking my truck up, I noticed the PMD was not remote mounted. I asked why not and he stated that the warranty on the pump would be voided if the seal was broke to remove the PMD. Whatever! I will be remote mounting the old one myself. Not sure where yet but am thinking on the firewall behind the main fuse box. Any better suggestions?
knkreb 03-26-2005, 10:28 AM The cooler location the better. Maybe in the air box, or in front of radiator maybe?
Texas Diesel Guy 03-26-2005, 05:48 PM I know the optic sensor in the DS pump will shut the engine down if it sees ice also.
It doesn't really 'see' anything, its not like a camera lens, it just a yes/no, I/O, on/off. If ice or contaminats interfere, then it obviously can't do its job and sends a mixed message or no signal to the ECM.
