Well, i did it. Put the new one in, loosened the injector lines at the injectors and cranked till fuel came out, tightened them up and it started right up. I never thought i would live to see this day - every so-called professional mechanic in the area gave me a fearful look when i asked if they knew how to replace an injection pump - yet an idiot like me managed to pull it off single-handedly.

So now the question is how to properly calibrate it? I have a GM service manual that explains this part but i don't have any of the tools they require to do it with and don't have the money to buy any of them (that's why i had to replace the pump myself).
The person who did the rebuild said the main thing will be adjusting the timing marks at the top of the pump, and then also adjusting the throttle-vacuum thing on the passenger side of the pump, which will adjust the way it shifts.
I haven't tried to drive it yet, and the only thing i noticed so far that seems different than before is it seems to idle very low - almost sounds like it will stall at first - and giving it a little gas makes it idle more like the way it used to. So does anyone know how to adjust this? Any other advice?
thanks again for your help.

Paul, The curb idle speed is controlled by the black, 5/16" hex head screw in the bottom half of the black throttle bell crank on the lt. side of the IP, opposite the vacuum regulator valve with the two vacuum lines coming out of the side of it.

Use a long, skinny screw driver, go down through the linkage and between the cruise control (if you have one) diaphram and the pump. Adjust the speed by turning the screw clockwise (viewed from the end of the screw driver) to increase idle speed.

The pump timing marks are located on top of the pump flange, and the engine locating mark is on the timing cover, top center. The two marks oppose each other where the pump mates to the timing cover. Adjust the marks, engine turned off, by loosening the three 15mm nuts holding the pump to the timing cover and rotate the pump housing as necessary. Turn the pump housing one to two line-widths (top of the pump toward the drivers side fender) to advance the timing. Never, NEVER loosen the pump or try to turn it while the engine is running! Personal injury can result!!

The vacuum regulator valve is held onto the passenger side of the pump by two 3/8" hex head capscrews. Loosen and turn forward or backward to adjust. To make the shifts softer and at a lower speed, rotate counter-clockwise (viewed from the passenger side), moving the vacuum lines toward the rear of the truck. To cause later, firmer shifts, move the valve vacuum fittings toward the front of the truck. Be careful, tighten screws lightly. They only hold the plastic valve in place. They have been known to strip out in the housing.

That's about all you need to adjust to get it to run. The fast idle solenoid is adjusted from the top end of the shaft that sticks up above the solenoid. 1/4" hex head, brass colored screw (shaft goes all the way through the solenoid. Tip rests on the throttle lever. Adjust to desired speed by connecting a jumper wire to the solenoid, connect other end to B+ (12 volt positive).

Let us know how it runs..Fred
