: What is the deal with not being able to sell an old chevy??
Rio_Grande 03-23-2005, 02:58 PM As some of you know I have a 83 Chevrolet truck for sale. It is rough but make a good beater and actually runs better than mine. I have had 20 plus people stop and look at it and as soon as they find out it is a Diesle they are done.. One guy even stopped and said he had looked at it while we were gone and wanted to buy it. Asked if I would take a check and I told him cash only. He leaves and returns aparently with cash this time. He asks if there is anything he needed to know and I said ya, the Glow plugs are manual. He just looked at me and said what do you mean glow plugs. I told him it was a diesel started it right up and he said he did not want a diesle and left...
I get 17+MPG in my truck compared to my 4 cyl jeep at 12. What gives???? Heck all I want is 800.00 for it why is this so tough????
When I bought this pair I was looking specificaly for a diesel.... Just not necessairly two of them...
87burb 03-23-2005, 03:19 PM where are you located at??? some it's the fear of diesel's the cost to maintan them... you know the horror storys staters $200 Ip pumps $400 that kind of thing...
Fred482` 03-23-2005, 06:20 PM I'm with you, Rio Grande. I asked the same questions over on the 5.7 Diesel website. I listed everything I had for $2500. Four cars, eleven engines, boxes and boxes of NOS, used and rebuilt parts. Lots of IP's, etc. No takers, too far from Oregon to the east coast, I guess. Just goes to show ya, you can have what others want, offer it and suddenly they don't want it. They complain they can't find stuff, I have stuff!!Good luck on your truck, it's a good buy....Fred
D.Camilleri 03-24-2005, 12:06 AM You just need to advertise it to the right crowd. There is a large movement on to buy ex military rigs with the 6.2, they are dependable and get good mileage. There are even still a few people out there looking to transplant a 6.2 into an older truck to replace their 350 gasser. Truth be told though, a diesel owner has to be a little more mechanically inclined to take care of the simple things that would confuse some people that have a hard time finding the hood release let alone turning a wrench. There are also a lot of shops out there that bad mouth GM diesels because they don't know what they are talking about or they have had bad luck repairing them because they didn't know what they were doing.:exactly:
Fred482` 03-24-2005, 11:31 AM To many shops, the light duty diesel has gone the way of the carburetor. "Carburetor, what's a carburetor??" I hear this at almost every auto parts store in the area. Most shops don't have diesel techs that have worked on engines with manual IP's or non-electronic controlled stuff. The engine techs know enough to get into trouble but not enough to make proper repairs and diagnoses. They are quick to blame problems on the "Magic Boxes".
Mastiff 03-25-2005, 10:37 AM My CUCV diesel is fun as hell, but I like to wrench around, and I have a gas vehicle for commuting to work. You have to give people a break, a diesel is very different and mostly in a negative way for most applications - noisy, hard to start, not peppy with no turbo, hard to find fuel, stinky, mechanics don't know how to fix 'em, parts are expensive, more likely to leak oil, etc.I might be missing something, but I don't know who would want a NA 6.2L truck except someone who thought it was cool and was into mechanical stuff for its own sake. That's why I wanted one. :) Oh, and for the 4x4 crowd, diesel is cool because it doesn't flood out at angles and it doesn't have electrical to get screwed up underwater. As was mentioned, there are people who swap them in place of gas motors, but they aren't your average buyers.
GREASE FIRE 03-25-2005, 01:39 PM Rio-Grande,
advertise it to the biodiesel/SVO crowd (people like me) and you will sell it for sure. Search the internet for the various forums, they all have free classified sections, some you can even put pictures up. People that are getting free/cheap fuel are more likely to buy a fixer-up than people paying 2.75/gallon for diesel like in seattle.

Rio_Grande 03-25-2005, 02:40 PM I see the points, I just never seen so much nitpicking over a 800.00 truck,, Just seems like pepole used to be more realistic about used vehicles. I mean I have seen some cherry 80's model trucks sell for a decent price, but Not 800.00. Maybee I am looking at it wrong. I love my 83 even with the bits of trouble it has given me.. It is still my puller and I really don't have much trouble out of it.
Anyway I will try the Bio deisle folks...
War Wagon 03-26-2005, 04:06 PM The old chevy diesels get a bad rep from a lot of people because when the 5.7 came out it wasn't very successful, and even by the time the 6.2 came a lot of people who bought them didn't know how run diesel resulting in a lot of glow plug problems and such.
