: Headlight light sensor fell into my dash

Hello,

Last night I noticed that my headlight sensor had fallen into my dash. After searching and reading the solutions (most involved removing the dash cap) I decided to try another way.

I found some fine nylon string in the garage which I formed into a loop holding both ends in one hand. Then I gently worked the string down the hole into the dash, wiggling it until the string fell past the sensor. I then crossed the string ends in my hand to cause the looped end to wrap all the way around the sensor. at that point I gently lifted the sensor up to the hole in the dash and used a screw driver to rotate it slightly so that the tabs on the sensor lined up with the slots in the dash. One more tug and "Bingo", I got it.

I was able to rotate the sensor so that the tabs engaged with the dash, however I can not seem to tun it all the way so it is completely locked in. My fear is that I will damage the sensor so I am not using any tools.

Has anyone replaced or installed this sensor and how hard was it to turn that last little bit?

Of course, my truck has 40,450 on it so it is no longer covered in the warranty.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Yea, I had the same problem and tried what you did and it didn't work. You are going to have to remove the dash cover to finish turning it. It takes some force to get it to turn and lock in. Removal of the dash is not as hard as it may look ,20 mins tops and gives you the oppertunity to remove any thing between the dash and windsheild ie; pencils, bugs, etc

Its a very light click to install it, not much force req at all..

Hey thanks for your reply regarding the light sensor. I am just having a little trouble clicking it into it's final position from the top of the dash. It is a little hard to get a good grip on the sensor.

Do you think I could push against one of the tabs on the sensor with a small wooden dowel in order to get it pushed completely around?

Thanks

i took my dash apart last year. that sensor goes in from the top. there is 2 tabs that click into place, wired how that managed to fall through that small hole.

My Sons fell through also and I managed to fish it out and not wanting to tear apart the dash for now , just pulled the wires through the hole and left the sensor sitting on top of the hole . It DOES NOT mount from the top as stated above , although the Chevy engineer that designed that part was definately thinking about getting you back into the service dept. later . Would be a good aftermarket replacement part to be installed from the top .
