: New exhaust, lost kitty. How do I reset check engine light?
adork 03-23-2005, 10:13 AM I just installed my MBRP exhaust (love it!) and noticed my check engine light came on shortly there after. I've ordered up my finger stick which should cure the problem moving forward, but how do I reset the check engine light.
Also, I've seen many discussions here talking about limp mode. I've noticed when I get on the go pedal, the truck moves, but not like it should. When the check engine light is on, does the truck go in to limp mode?
briano 03-23-2005, 10:24 AM you probably have the EGR codes and they tripped the SES light because of the kitty running off..if no scanner just head to Autozone, they will scan and delete the codes if you want. -for free
adork 03-23-2005, 10:29 AM Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if the truck goes in to limp mode when the check engine light goes on? If so, I'm hoping that I'll get back the power I seem to have lost since it came on. If not, this might not be a good thing.
briano 03-23-2005, 10:31 AM no it doesn't... limp mode is caused by the tranny. do a search for limp mode as well.
sounds like you have the problem I had when I did exhaust. the egr is what caused mine to lose power. the plate and sticks will fix you up.
riverchucky 03-23-2005, 10:46 AM Ditto on my CA emissions version '05 LLY. Within 40 miles the SES light came on after I installed Magnaflow catback system, lost power. Reset the system, truck ran great, until the SES light came on again.
Back then, didn't know about Fingers finger sticks and EGR plate. Reinstalled the stock exhaust system (thank goodness I hung on to it) reset codes & no problems since. Think I'll give it a little more time with the R&D before re-trying the catback and attempting an airbox. Really appreciate the experience you guys have on Diesel Place site.

I did the exact same thing you did..I reinstalled my stock pipes and power came back. I have since removed the kitty and kept the stock muffler and it runs fine. Been almost a month and no codes at all.
adork 03-23-2005, 10:56 AM Well my finger stick and EGR plate should be here this week and I'll install them this weekend. I'm still a bit concerned about the loss of power though. This is my first diesel, but I've modified countless cars. Opening up the exhaust is a good thing and it always adds power. So I have no idea why I would be loosing power on my truck after ditching the kitty and opening up the exhaust.
riverchucky 03-23-2005, 10:56 AM Oh yeah, most performance chip manufactures have a provision to read and reset codes. Got a great deal on a SuperChip unit and used it to read DTC codes and reset.
Heard this unit may be a problem with the '05's. Got brave and tried programing with the 'Tow-safe' mode (65 hp gain), so far approx. 500+ miles, truck runs great, takes off like a rocket, no codes thrown and seeing improvement in fuel economy. Like'n it so far!
Vertical-escape 03-23-2005, 11:53 AM When the check engine light comes on because of exhaust or intake mods, does it reduce power in the motor? I heard someone talking about that the turbo acts differently, is this true?
Just installed the plate and finger stick last night, just curious if I would get some more power by getting the light to go off.):h
By the way, if anyone is considering the fingerstick and is intimidatted by it, don't let it, it wasn't bad at all.
5thgeartapped 03-23-2005, 12:12 PM I removed the cat and the muffler on a CA truck, 100 miles no light, runs great. I have the stick and plate, but havent put it in. If I have no light, should I still install them if I have no light? maybe I have codes, just no light?
adork 03-23-2005, 12:31 PM 5thgeartapped:
You're lucky so far. Our Ca trucks are more sensitive to getting codes than the fed trucks. You may have codes without the light, but installing the finger stick is the cure for that. If you install the EGR plate without the stick, then you are guaranteed a light!

Did canning the kitty lower egt's pretty well? Curious if that helped with performance as well, if noticeable. MBRP pipe right? Can't help but toy with the new rig. Nice looking rig Briano.

As far as temps, they went down 20-60 across the board. That isn't much compared to the complete exhaust system previously that dropped 200 degrees, but any drop is good. There is quicker spool up time and of course the ever present louder turbo whistle. I don't have the blocker plate or teh finger sticks and have yet to get any codes.
here is some info on it

Diesel_Day_Dreamin 03-23-2005, 05:19 PM adork,
If you get a power mod without a code resetter and are tired of running to Auto Zone, get yourself one of these at this site...

riverchucky 03-23-2005, 06:56 PM Thanks for the info Briano!
adork 03-23-2005, 08:16 PM Thanks Diesel_Day_Dreamin':
I'm looking in to getting a programmer soon. Right now I'm working on getting my pyro and boost pressure gauges hooked up. I'll be posting some pics as it should come out pretty cool. I'm new to the diesel thing, so I've posted another thread under performance mods to get ideas about what programmer, or stack combo to use. I'm getting the idea I'll be throwing a few codes on my way to getting this beast properly tuned!!!:muahaha:
Fingers 03-23-2005, 09:31 PM FWIW. If you make the cause of a code go away, the code will too after a few ignition cycles. You do not have to clear them manually.
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 03-23-2005, 09:53 PM Thanks for the info Fingers... I'm buying it for my Wife's Tahoe also. It's been doing weird stuff lately and not lighting the check engine soon light. I wanted to see if there were any codes listed before they "correct" or "reset" themselves.
Looks like the stick I ordered from you will beat the delivery of my new truck (thats why I claim it's on the bench).
Adork, I'm new to diesels myself, other than my JD tractor. These trucks seem to be the Buick Grand Nationals of the mid '80s. It took 462 cubic inch motor in my Monte just to do what those little V6 turbos would do! As you can see, I like to tinker, and I can't wait to get my new truck home! As I read in another thread, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, waiting to open presents! This is one of the longest 8 weeks I've experienced in a long time.
socal LLy 03-24-2005, 02:12 AM I have the cool dual set up and removed the kitty and drove to laughlin no light on the way there but on the way home I pulled a big 9,000 pound boat and the check engine light came onbut as soon as I got the boat off the truck the light went out
socal LLy 03-24-2005, 02:45 AM I forgot to mention my truck smells real bad with out the cat raw fuel smell comes and goes

When the check engine light comes on because of Exhaust or Intake mods, It usually means that the Tranny is putting it into Limp mode. So figuratively speaking you do lose some power.
The ECM probably reduces the amount of boost the Turbo gives off, because of this.
JJs DuMax 03-24-2005, 08:50 AM I had the MBRP "cool duals" installed on Monday and the kitty is gone. So far no lights, very fast turbo spool up, and nice sound especially when romping on it. I'm going to run it for about a week then stop into Autozone to see if any codes have been set. Good discussion! JJ :)
Kappa9012 03-24-2005, 09:19 AM My catback magnaflow kit never tripped a light. Engine runs great, no problems at all, minus the two injectors dropping out.
Fingers 03-24-2005, 09:48 AM The EGR codes do not produce a "limp" mode. However the VVT managment is different when there are EGR codes. Some people are throwing additional codes when changing intakes and exhausts. Especially when running tuners or boxes. These other codes sometimes limp the motor.
adork 03-24-2005, 10:08 AM Thanks for all the input. I think I've figured out why the loss of power. Due to all the cars I've modified, I should know a little better. I guess I'm just a little over excited about this truck and right after I did the exhaust, I installed my 56 gallon tank. When I put the fuel pick up in the tank, I recall that it seemed the unit was right against the bottom of the tank. My FASS has been making some funny noises and I'm going to do some diagnostics on it this weekend. I'm betting a dime to a dollar that I've got a fuel starvation issue here. And that would match the symptoms right on. I'll report back after I've looked more closely at it over the weekend. :grd:
adork 03-29-2005, 11:47 AM Okay. Here are the results. I put on my fingerstick and went down to Autozone to see what codes I had and clear them. I had the P0404, P0401 and P0299. All the usual suspects. I cleared them and haven't had any reset yet. Also, the power is back in a big way!!! Much better than pre exhaust and front pipe. EGR plate this weekend...
