: why not 100% bio???
joispoi 03-23-2005, 09:11 AM I'm a relatively new diesel owner. I've been reading about biodiesel for a few years. I'm interested in running my truck on it. I've read that you DON'T want to run 100% bio diesel because it is no good for seals, pump etc... I see that most guys here are blending and seem satisfied. Anybody running 100%. What about blending with WVO? Also looking for WVO source in CT. Thanks- Joi
hannaco 03-23-2005, 10:23 AM No reason not to run with B100. It used to be the added expense that stopped people. Now with #2 running above $2.50 a gallon, BD looks reasonable.
In older diesels that had rubber instead of synthetic hoses and fittings, BD was a problem. Over time it would eat away at the hoses, and they would fail.
I can't imagine any diesel of current vintage not having synthetic hoses and gaskets.
RonJT 03-23-2005, 12:53 PM Should be ok..newer diesels should have better seals because of the arrival of ULSD.
I will be running B100 for 110 gallons and see...also will test the fuel.
joispoi 03-23-2005, 02:01 PM what are we calling "older diesels"? Mine's a '96.
mannytranny 03-23-2005, 03:04 PM Ron - Did you get the fuel from Leoco?
I called Jim the other day, and he said that they had 8 barrels of b100 at the time I bought my barrel (Jan 5), and now they only have 2 left........That would imply that those two barrels are at least 3 months old.............This worried me. Same price though............
I am getting to the end of my barrel, and I decided to do another homemade water test......I put bottle of BD in the fridge overnight, and it came back just a tiny bit cloudy. The origional sample showed no cloud at all. I am wondering if it is a big deal........Water is going to form in the tank of the truck anyway, may be better to run biodiesel to deal with the water problem by the added lub. of BD.........
Any ideas?
RonJT 03-23-2005, 08:02 PM MANNY,
I just picked up three barrels....but I am not worried about the time...I will test the fuel.
One of the barrels is for someone in West LA to run in his older Mercedes.
Luckily my buddy's shop had a fork lift and wooden pallets...it would have been a b..h
getting those things out of the truck.
You may want to wait...this fuel I have to get the tax credit money back from the government...some damn IRS form.
The next batch will have the discount in it.
I plan on running full strength baby..so I will go through it fast. Screw the oil companies...at least at this price.
MaxRock 03-24-2005, 12:15 PM RonJT,
What type of truck do you have?
MaxRock
RonJT 03-24-2005, 12:50 PM MaxRock,
The 'ole LB7 2004 vintage.
MaxRock 03-24-2005, 02:20 PM Good...my 'ole LB7 is an '02 vintage. I'm very interested in your experience with b100. Do you run any additional fuel filters?
Thanks,
MaxRock
RonJT 03-24-2005, 03:08 PM I do...kinda of a little overboard. Never owned a diesel..first one..then joined forum...then read about injectors and dirty fuel...then purchased both the CAT and the RACOR preOEM. Run a lift pump.
You can never have too clean a fuel..no matter what you burn.
Diesel Dragon 03-24-2005, 03:33 PM Also looking for WVO source in CT. Thanks- Joi
There's a fleet fueling station in New Haven that sells bio-diesel if you live in the area
B20 I think
But it's about 25 cents more a gallon than straight diesel
Let us know. I have a place in Tucson selling BIO for $1.83 while #2 is over $2.40 I do not want to hassel with mixing if I can help it. Anyone know what the dealer recommends as far as running 100% BIO?..Jim

If you can really call these trucks stock:ro)
Bodysurfer 03-31-2005, 05:04 PM Quote from the 2004 Duramax Diesel Supplemently Booklet:
Page 5-3:
".... It is acceptable to use diesel fuel containing up to 5% biodiesel (B5), but the final blended fuel must meet the sam specification, ASTM D975-02 (Grade Low Sulfur), as other fuels used in your vehicle, and the biodiesel used for making this fuel must meet the ASTM D5751-02 specification.
Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oils or animal fat that have been chemically modified to reduce the possiblilty of damage to you fuel system and engine. Higher concentration (i.e. greater than B5) biodiesel-containing fules or the use of unmodified bio-oils blended into diesel fuel at any concentration is not recommended and could damage your fuel system and engine. Such damage would not be covered by your warranty. If there are questions about the biodiesel-containing fuels you are using, contact your fuel supplier"
LATER!
mannytranny 03-31-2005, 06:04 PM If we all followed the info in the nice little booklet, where would we be?
Run the B100..........if you want to be extra sure, test the fuel, and then run it. Those are significant savings.........
RonJT 03-31-2005, 06:22 PM Boy ain't that the truth.
Why would GM say it is ok to run Biodiesel if there is even a hint at increased warranty work.
Look at VW...not too long ago they denied all Bio yet allowed it in Europe..same car.
The main thing is the quality of the Biodiesel....which since it is not mainstream...is not controlled although there ASTM specs.
I just got my two drums of B100 and started using it. I will send a sample off to the lab here shortly.
mannytranny 03-31-2005, 06:27 PM Hey Ron, I spoke to Jim at leoco a few days ago. He said that he had two barrels left.............I wonder if those are the two youve got.
Let me know how your tests turn out.........I think that those barrels are at least 4 months old. Maybe not a big deal.??
RonJT 04-01-2005, 10:13 AM The barrels he has left is after I picked up the three a week and half ago (2 for me one for the guy in west la)
Jim told me that he had such an increase in interest that is thinking about dropping some of the drums off at local sites in the LA area.
It may jack the price up a bit...not sure.
IF you can wait for the next batch..I would wait. Also...if you really need a fix...make a run down to RTC on El Cajon blvd....take some containers with you and fill up to make the trip feasable.

Oil companies in bed with car manufacturers. Why do you suppose the average car in America has such bad fuel economy? Sell more oil, maybe?
