well i dont wanna blow any whistles yet but notice the quality duct tape seal backed by the zip tie construction. works great with SD's manifold.

Well, heck! You need the duct tape to connect to the cylinder - cause that booger's got bass-ackwards threads on it!!:D

I suggest a modification to put in a ball-valve with a chunk of twine taped to the lever so you can fire that baby at will through the driver's window. What do you do now? Screw her down at the lights and hope the other guy doesn't stage slow?):h

I tried but none of my friends would sit on my motor durring a 100mph blast and operate the valve:confused: Maybe it was becasue my install wasnt as nice as yours. Went through all that work of yanking the hood and they pussed out:mad: I rigged a setup with a longer tube so it could be turned on from inside the cab but we ran outa gas cooking brats for lunch. I used map gas to, it has a real nice flavor to it.......

Little did I know it involved duct tape and zipties! Nice rig, Ryan! ):h

YA know, though......IF you were at the track, and wanted to run propane for a couple runs, it is a neat idea. Don't think you'd make it through pre-race inspection, though.

as stupid as that sounds, i bet that idea could have merrit, with a nitrous jet style, and would work great if your looking for just a short 1/4 mile stabs at the track, at WOT, then as soon as the boost is over, all is done, you might be on to something there ryan:rolleyes:

keep in mind to have it enter on the filter minder for better mixing threw the turbo:D

Awesome idea Ryan ! :D
I've considered the same thing in the past but was also unclear on jet sizes so I never persued it. It has however remained on my mind. Would be the perfect setup for a little backup when leaving the redlights. Also wondered how many runs a bottle would be good for and how much HP can be gained. Any Ideas?

Since we've swung to the serious side of this - what about vaporization? Isn't it a big no-no (engine blow-blow) to get liquid propane in the intake? Could you be sure that you weren't going to get a squirt wid your spurt and your engine really hurt? Especially mounted like the "prototype" where extreme acceleration would push the liquid back into the hose. Just a thought.

I have a friend that has been running his dodge this way for about two years that I know of. He uses one of the fat Coleman bottles and said it last him about two trips to the desert towing his trailer. Has the bottle in the cab with a hose out to the intake of the turbo. Everything is cleanly mounted underhood and inside the line comes up under the seat. When not being used has a plug for the hose and puts it under the seat. When towing he pulls the line out from under the seat and pushes it onto the valve on the bottle and lays it on the seat. When he wants a little extra, he cranks the valve open and stop turning when your happy. He's an old trucker so he uses the pryo to let him know when enough is enough. Just for help towing not racing. I always thought it was a little out there but it looks like you guys are ready to give it a try.

here goes nothin... im goin tomorrow to get some fittings, line, a colman bottle, using a relay and a an extra n2o solenoid and diff jet sizes, im gonna kick it in off a hobbs. anyone know what kinda valve i will need to screw down onto the coleman to release the lp. id like a valve on the bottle that i can turn on and off. im gonna mount the bottle sittin upright to avoid liquid lp entering the engine. should i spray it in at the intake tube for better distribution through the air or through my SD manifold? wonder where i can come up with a nozzel to spray it? im gonna start off with real small jets just to test it, then work my way up...slowly

Let's take a vote? Just be honest, please. My trucks life could be in your hands..LOL

1. Who thinks it's a dumb idea?

2. Who thinks it's not a bad idea but it won't work for what I'm wanting(adding a little so i can run a tad more n2o at the track)

3. Who think's it's a good idea and I should :grd:

Idle_Chatter
03-26-2005, 08:15 AM
I think it might be a good idea for short shots.:) I still have the concern for getting a shot of liquid. You could just use a cheap torch to adapt to the skinny bottle. For a Coleman, you'd need a part from a heater, camp stove or lantern. Might be able to get it from Coleman as a repair part - otherwise look for an Ebay or yard sale bargain on a heater, camp stove or lantern. I don't know why I'm "enabling" you on this, but I guess it's okay, because I'm thinking about putting acetone in my fuel tanks!

TheBac
03-26-2005, 08:39 AM
IIRC, don't those little Coleman camp stoves have a "remote" valve for the little tank? Or maybe those Coleman LP powered camping lanterns. You could start there.....sounds like going to an RV/camping store would be your best bet.

Actually Ryan, this is a neat idea. We're just giving you heck because it's such a darn obviously-easy-to-do shorttime LP mod.....and noone else thought of it. :ro)

3. Who think's it's a good idea and I should :grd:My vote's for good idea and :grd: I would make sure and keep the bottle upright and purchase a orifice nipple that allows the intermal orifice to be unscrewed and changed. That way you can start with the smaller sizes and go up from there as needed.

I'm thinking a 12v solenoid valve, adjustable orifice and a manual shutoff valve would be plenty safe for the occasional burst when needed. For continous or frequent use I would go with a full system.

I always laughed at him after seeing what he did but he still doing it and no fires yet, so I figure what the heck, let theses guys know about it. There going to do it any way.

Ryan

he uses a valve from a propane torch and removes the tip so you just have the valve and a round tube. Slip the hose over the tube and secure with a zip tie. Do not inject after the turbo, do it into the intake side of the turbo. He does not use a jet just controls how far open the valve is.

03-26-2005, 02:38 PM
i have never seen liquid lp comming out of the small bottle before, maybe i did, but never thought anything of it, how about you guys, or even the little blue bottle torches, even at wide open, how about you guys, used in all sorts of poistions

RyanU
03-26-2005, 02:43 PM
well off to wally world and the hardware i go. hopefully i can come up with something. if i inject it through the little hole in my afe pipe, where the air vacumn reader thing is, will i need a nozzelor can it just enter from the hose? with the small amouns im gonna be runnin i dont think it will be to unstable. im just lookin for a little bit more fuel at the track and dont really know how else to get it. i dont need a complete fullblown kit but i do want something and i think this might be a good idea. wouldnt you think injecting pre turbo with suck a small amout i shouldnt get any liquid LP?

McRat
03-26-2005, 02:44 PM
I thought this was a joke thread?

A torch bottle only holds a quart, if that. $7 a burst could get VERY expensive.

The beauty of propane is that you can run it long distances inexpensively.

McRat
03-26-2005, 02:46 PM
If it is not a joke, take an unlit torch and open it full blast and see that it just puts out gas (it does).

powershotone

I thought it was a joke too. Was amusing too:funnypost

A vertical bottle is meant to remain vertical. It will feed vapor/Gas in the correct position, liquid in the wrong or unintended position.

Diesel Tech
03-26-2005, 03:07 PM
All I can tell you is his bottle is laying on the seat on its side and he has had no trouble to date. I would think if there was any liquid by the time it gets to the motor its gone at the low levels this mod can produce.

a bear
03-26-2005, 04:05 PM
Put the orifice @ the bottle with the bottle upright and if any liquid leaves the bottle from rough roads or other adgitation which is highly unlikely it will immediately vaporize in the hose. Also this way you can use LP hose as the pressure drop will be at the bottle.

Big Red Max
03-26-2005, 07:07 PM
I suggest putting the bottle in the cab. For one HEAT under the hood. Another is if there is a malfunction and, or fire you have a way to shut off the fuel. Other than that :grd: .
