: Remove K&N style airfilter when takeing to the shop??
gittyup 03-23-2005, 01:21 AM I've read post & threads that say to remove chips (OJ) when taking truck to a dealer and I understand that. Right now I have a K&N style drop in filter (its a Green somthing or other). I will be replaceing it with an AFE stage 2 this weekend. My question is do I need to put the old intake on if i take it to the dealer? And if so do i need to get a paper filter to put in the stock air intake? Somone told me (they might be FOS) that the oil on the K&N style filters will clog up somthing and screw up the trans.
I have only been on this site for a week or so and I have already learned alot. :bow:Thanks to all!!!
tophog 03-23-2005, 01:26 AM There is a TSB floating around somewhere specific to aftermarket/oil-based air cleaners and how they can cause MAP sensor problems, etc. If it were me and I still had the stock one I'd put it on. Otherwise you're opening pandora's box depending on the dealer.
ssduramax 03-23-2005, 08:25 AM You said it Tophog.
i would take it to the dealer as close to stock as possible. I left the dealer yesterday and the Service manager tried the old scare tacktic on me (the only thing my truck had on it for the visit was a stainles grill cover), said he would take pictures and void my warranty nation wide blah blah blah.
any way, just my experience with this particular dealer, wont have to worry about me going back there again.
bigblackdmax 03-23-2005, 09:34 AM Yeah I left on my afe system when I took it to the dealer and they said my mass air flow sensor was messed up because a little bit to the oil off of the filter got on the mass air flow sensor and messed everything up. They said they would fix it under warranty this time but would not do it again and said I should put on the stock one again. Yeah right. So if I was you I would put the stocker back on.
lakingslayer 03-23-2005, 09:46 AM I had a K&N on my Y2K 1500. I never had a problem with it. The only reason I don't do it on this truck is that I won't gain a whole lot with it and the possibility of messing up the MAF isn't something I want to chance (I had no clue about this on my 1500 or I wouldn't have done it on that truck either). I've had a bad run in with a dealer and the one I go to now doesn't care what I have on my truck. The only thing is if a GM rep happens to be at the dealer while your truck is there with mods on it they can make your life miserable by telling you they will void your warranty. That is a whole other discussion which you can read about on other posts. Just my .02.
tophog 03-23-2005, 11:24 AM If a dealer were ever to give me a bad time about a grille? I would instantly tell them to pack sand and be on my way. Unbelievable a dealer would stoop this low ...only an idiot would not realize if a person just spent $40K+ on a truck they do not be to be given a bad time about a pretty grille they just put on the front. Of course, if the grille were purchased thru the dealer parts department nothing would have been said.
dieselfumes57 03-23-2005, 01:04 PM dont worry just alot of paranoid people round here
tophog 03-23-2005, 01:22 PM In many cases that "paranoia" is the basis of real world incicidents where warranties have been VOID by aftermarket accessories/products. :) There are dealers that wouldn't hesitate to void warranty for any aftermarket accessory while there are others that don't bat an eye when they see an AFE intake, Juice, lift kit, oversized tires, etc. It's a crap shoot ...so the question is ..."how lucky you feel".
gittyup 03-23-2005, 11:17 PM I think I'll take it off before taking it to the dealer (just to be safe).
Thanks for the info!!!
And thats a load of CRAP about your grill... HOW & WHY would that item mess w/ your warranty.
ssduramax 03-24-2005, 07:44 AM the service manager brought up the overheating issue, which led to the whole picture taking...he said some other guy brought his in with an edge box velcroed to the fuse box and he took pictures for the same reason.
needless to say, the dealer off of Suddley Road south of exit 46A I66 whose name sounds alot like Dudley Martin will not see me again, unless the axel seal they put in still leaks after i pressure wash it (they either didnt clean the rim or it is leaking worse now).
jnieberlein 03-24-2005, 10:53 PM In WV they will void your warranty if you do not have the proper amount of duct tape and bailing wire on your truck, ):h SSMAx sorry about your luck with the dealer but after living in NOVA for 5 years the people and practices there really dont suprise me, it sure is nice to live where they still speak english.:sheephump Bah.....
ssduramax 03-24-2005, 11:10 PM :beerchug: Speaking of the duct tape an bailing wire, i better stock up befor i move back to Alabama:bounce:, should be another year or so here then back to the land of the big parking spots and the english speaking folks
