DieselCash 11-20-2008, 07:01 PM Welcome to Diesel Place!
We need more info and facts on these trucks!
Regardless I say go for the chevy, dodges are a pain in the arse to work on!
05dmax73chevell 11-20-2008, 07:12 PM if the chevy is gas and dodge is diesel- get the dodge- great mpgs and power plus easy upgrades
if the chevy is diesel and dodge is gas- get the dodge- 6.5 diesels are not to good-that is unless you change the choices to a 6.6 Duramax! than dodge is out of the ?
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 07:20 PM if the chevy is gas and dodge is diesel- get the dodge- great mpgs and power plus easy upgrades

hey hey now. the 6.5 is a perfectly good motor when properly taken care of. my truck runs great and pulls great too. the stock form of a 6.5 is a slug pretty much. open up the exhaust and intake to get it breathing and chip it/reflash it and you've got a decent machine for less than 1/2 the price of a new dmax, or even a used one for that matter.

That statement's gonna create a shit storm right there.
There's nothing wrong with the 6.5's. Properly maintained, they can be made into very good running trucks. I got much props to the 6.5 crowd for taking flak like this every day.
DieselCash 11-20-2008, 07:23 PM 6.5 diesels are not to good
What?
You must be another one of those duramax guys that knows nothing about the 6.5. You think the Duramax is so much better? Than why is it every year our so they have to change your motor? Go back to your over sized section of the forum!
You must be lost!
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 07:25 PM That statement's gonna create a shit storm right there.

:beerchug: the 6.5 is the out of place ford of the chevy diesel world. a bit out of place with modern engines but its holds its own none the less. :D plus its got a sweet sounding exhaust note that i just love.
Brooklyn tow 11-20-2008, 07:28 PM Well..................................This is a "Chevy Diesel 6.5" forum.
Take a look around at the stickey's at the top of the page and you will get more info on a Chevy 6.5TD than "you can shake a Dodge at."
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 07:29 PM dodges are a pain in the arse to work on!
they are, and the bodies rot right off of them. my dads got a 2001 ram 2500 5.9 gasser with less than 100,000 miles on it and the bottom of the doors are already starting to rot. :nono:

Yup, what he said. The 6.5 is a useless, gutless POS that GM should have never offered because the Cummins and Power Stroke, and all gassers from the same era are so much better...
Right.
I guess all of us here with properly maintained 6.5's are just a bunch of IDIots. Why don't you go back to your own forum to spread crap? This is a GM Diesel forum. I'd think any decent GM Diesel owner would respect the other GM Diesels, like most of us do. Granted, I would take an 89-02 Cummins over a Duramax, but I still respect, understand, and appreciate the Duramax. I do not however, go into the Duramax forums and call them "not to[o] good" without any clue about them, as you have done here. Why not do us all a favor and go back to your Duramax forum and do whatever you do there.

I love my paid for 6.5, how is that house payment on wheels?
dirtfarmer629 11-20-2008, 07:38 PM Plus this is a diesel website we are always suppose to say get the diesel as long as it is in decent shape. I personally would take about any diesel over a dodge gas motor anytime.
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 07:39 PM no fighting guys. lets try and find out more from the OP on which truck's got which engine at least.
dirtfarmer629 11-20-2008, 07:41 PM You are right really shouldn't even comment back not worth it. Let him think what he wants.
silasbenny 11-20-2008, 07:55 PM the chevy is DIESEL.
The guy told me he gets 18 MPG
Diaric 11-20-2008, 08:01 PM i have a turbo 6.2 chev, a 1 ton diesel dodge and a 1/2 ton gas dodge.
i have less rust on the dodges
would not get another dodge unless its diesel, the gas engine is a pain in the ass. the cummins is excellent for towing
the chev is great mpg , easy to work on and comfortable
Schwind 11-20-2008, 08:01 PM the chevy is DIESEL.
The guy told me he gets 18 MPG
the mileage is probably right and with a few inexpensive mods you can get even closer to 20 MPG. possably a little more depending on how you drive it.
read up in the faq's section and you will find out a lot more. the good and the bad and how the bad is fixed.
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 08:10 PM the chevy is DIESEL.
The guy told me he gets 18 MPG
my dads dodge 3/4 ton gas gets about 10-12 with a nv4500 5-spd trans.
my 3/4 GMC gets 18-ish with an automatic and can outrun the dodge doing so.
check out some of the links in my signature so you have a running start on what you need to look for on these trucks, just so you don't buy something that someone else destroyed.
Diaric 11-20-2008, 09:18 PM i have the early cummins, 22-23 imp mpg in a one ton with a heavy steel deck. great milage, but not fun to drive, my chev's have always been more comfortable

Id rather drive a Yugo than a POS dodge. Chevy is the only way to go. Even a ford is better than a dodge. Although, I like ford too so that really isn't unexpected of me.
rclem 11-20-2008, 10:58 PM i shook my dodge just a miniute ago.i pinched out a ford too
HamOP 11-20-2008, 11:02 PM I had a 318 Dodge 2WD-1/2 Ton when they first came out with the *new* body style. LOVED IT.
BUT the paint fell off - Twice - I don't paint. I maintain all of my own vehicles (always have) and really never had to do much to the Dodge other than suspension. Suspension sucked. Paint was pathetic!
Truck in my sig is actually FUN to work on! Lots of room in the engine bay. It wasn't maintained for years and only took a few days and a couple hundred dollars to get it in fair shape. Body & suspension is still quite good. Trans was slipping at 80k when I traded the Dodge for a car - I already had (still have) a '91 Chevy C1500 350 5 speed which I really, really do like but would trade if for a similar diesel Chevy in a heartbeat. These things are GREAT!
My $.02 : IF you do your own work get the Chevy. If you don't do your own work forget anything without a great warrantee!!!!! Parts aren't bad but the labor's a killer.
About the car -- My dad was very ill and just couldn't get into the truck anymore. Bought a 98 Grand Marquis to haul him about in till his time ran out. Still have it - Still like it. Great ride, 25 mpg on the highway, its white and has several antennas (I'm a ham). For some reason EVERYONE gets out of its way on the Interstates :-) My house (near Memphis) to Norfolk VA (work) was 14 hours, almost to the minute, in anything I drove here to there - A bit less than 11 hours in the *cop car* - every time.
I'd really rather drive one of my trucks, but the Merc gets the call on long trips just for the time and hassles saved.
Oh yeah - Cops wave - Even when I pass them.
All yall with either white or black Suburbans or Tahoes - Put 4 or 5 antennas on the roof, tint the windows, and watch what happens on 4 lanes. Sucks on 2 lane roads though. The cars in front of you all do the speed limit.

My buddy drives a 98 Crown Vic Police Enforcer. Everyone gets out of the way for him.

Got the black burb with tint in the back :D
HamOP 11-21-2008, 08:41 AM That'll work. They'll think you're CIA :naughty:
I need to find out if my old mom can get into a Sub. That would be the perfect replacement for the Merc.:)
DieselCash 11-21-2008, 09:01 AM you would never get that great fuel economy in a sub that you get out of the merc. I have a grandma that is almost 92 and she can get in and out of my Tahoe just fine. Mainly because it has the factory steps on it. I dont see why she would not be able to get in and out of a burb, just install some sturdy steps and ensure it has plenty of the oh shit handles.

X2 i know a guy with what sounds, like the exact truck, it is a total POS, but it is impossible to kill, I have never seen anyone harder on a vehicle than this guy, and the truck still won't die, granted, it's on it's 2nd tranny, and the rear end is welded full lock, but he pulls tractors and haywagons and does at least one burnout every time he drives the truck; and the motor is still as strong as ever. I would say that Dodge makes a tougher truck than Ford, espicially the newer ones, the new Fords are the biggest, ugliest, pieces of shit I have ever seen.
HamOP 11-21-2008, 11:44 AM I dont see why she would not be able to get in and out of a burb
Well - She's 83 and has SEVERE rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and feet - They're more like clubs than hands & feet. She's sharp as a tack and usually beats my wife and me at Wheel of Fortune, but manuverability isn't her strong suit. I'm going to try to borrow a Suburban and give it a try though.
I really like the 6.5 and have pretty much made up my mind to change my whole fleet (LOL) to GM Diesels. The Harley might be a problem, but I've seen SBC bikes out there :-) ... Maybe a 6.2 would be better on a bike though. NOW THERE'S A PROJECT!
jjw565 11-21-2008, 12:49 PM I bet an old 4.3L V6 diesel would fit on a bike if you could find one, that would definitely be cool!
SnowDrift 11-21-2008, 03:25 PM I am buying a new truck.
I have 2 choises.
95 chevy silverado ext.cab 2500 4x4 230000 miles $ 2500,-
97 dodge ext.cab 2500 4x4 85000 miles $ 2900,-
I don't know what to buy.....
Thanks
Buy the Chevy. You have told us 100% of the information we need in order to help you make a reasonable decision.

I've also been told it looks like its from a funeral home. I guess because a hearse is all black too.
radchevy 11-22-2008, 11:24 PM Not sure whats so great about the 6.5T. I have 220,000 plus on the truck and I am on my THIRD injecter pump and maybe going on my FOURTH. The dam truck will not start worth a $hit in cold weather. I thinking of droping a 6.0 gasser.
dur0maxx 11-22-2008, 11:31 PM Not sure whats so great about the 6.5T. I have 220,000 plus on the truck and I am on my THIRD injecter pump and maybe going on my FOURTH. The dam truck will not start worth a $hit in cold weather. I thinking of droping a 6.0 gasser.
Probably a mis-diagnosis all those time. An injector pump usually lasts a long time, it's the pmd that doesn't. Your cold start problem is probably bad glow plugs. There's nothing wrong with the 6.5's, it's usually mechanics that mis-diagnose the issues with these trucks because they know nothing about them.
radchevy 11-23-2008, 12:18 AM let's see the optical sensor failed not the PMD
The cam bolt came lose in the injector pump not the PMD
I dont remember what the othr issue was that was a long time ago.
Cold starts - reading up on some links
Same crap new Glow plugs all 11 fuse able links are good, plc timmer is ok, pulled a glow and yes is red hot. Checked the timming (tech11) - Good.
Still have the pmd in the stock location thinking of putting a new one in the air cleaner.
jbsaxman 11-23-2008, 12:21 AM Put the PMD behind the bumper. Get Heath's kit.
IamDave0887 11-23-2008, 12:25 AM Put the PMD behind the bumper. Get Heath's kit.
agreed 100% jbsaxman. Heath's kit is the best in the business, period. i've still got 6 long years of warranty left on mine.

Yup, it's a total POS, maybe you should give it to me.
monel_funkawitz 11-23-2008, 10:26 AM The sad truth about a 6.5 diesel is they let you know weither or not their owners are mechanically inclined. If you are going on your fourth IP, I suggest you go with a gas engine. I need an IP left for when my truck turns 500,000 miles and I change it for amusement.
If you are seriously on your 4th IP, you need to read up on the system, cause you are being taken advantage of, or you have a major underlying problem.
