make him show reciepts. find out what he did to that block, find out what he did to those heads. I recently spent $3500 on a chev big block and there was some sweet stuff done to it. the point being, did the rebuild deck the block, did he alighn hone the block, did he balance the lower rotating assembly. I'm new in some respects to diesels, but good machine work is worth its time in gold. the individual that did the work should be able to help you understand what he has done and why it was done. if the dude hands you a pamphlet, you need only tell him he's number one with the middle finger. alway's remember that you get what you pay for, a man who does a motor should respect it as his newborn (in a sence) or maybe I'm a little to into this type of thing.

if the "I built it for 3 grand" guy doesn't want to show you the truth, then tell him you have better uses for your time.

First things first, drive it. How does it run? Does it have good power? How well does it start? What does it look like, is the engine clean or is it leaking oil? Look at the accessories, alt, a/c, starter, batteries, do they look like they are fresh? Next check for blow-by and color of oil. Ask how the engine was maintained, how often was the life blood changed. Now move on to who rebuilt the engine and what parts were used. Was it bored, what brand of pistons, were the rods rebushed and resized. Bottom line is if the body is in good shape it is worth 1000.00. Is it 2wd or 4wd? 4wd being more desireable.:cool2: buy it if you like it!:grd:
