: painting intake
matuva 11-19-2008, 04:52 PM Howdy all,
I have the project of painting the F intake I will soon receive.
Any of you has already done this job? What kind of paint to use? anything special to prepare the intake?
Those who have a painted intake, could you post pics?
Thanks guys. ;)
DieselCash 11-19-2008, 04:55 PM man this sux!

I'm actually thinking of painted my F intake as well. I have to do it after I cut it though :/.
awake1630 11-19-2008, 05:57 PM wash it with a good degreaser first the wipe down throughly with acetone. Use a engine paint like dupli color or vht. Not plasti kote. Use a high temp primer first then a color.
DieselPro 11-19-2008, 07:37 PM Krylon makes a "dull aluminum" that looks like real aluminum and I highly recommend it. I think Dupli-color offers a "cast aluminum" that is almost as good. Neat thing about it is if you scuff it up or it just gets dirty just spray on some more.
daustin 11-19-2008, 07:49 PM I'd consider getting it ceramic coated, that will also help with heat too and last a very long time.
Don
BigBlueChevy 11-19-2008, 07:58 PM i took my grinder to mine. its polished and reemed out and looks practically like chrome. I'll post a pic tomorrow once light is availible :)

BigBlueChevy 11-19-2008, 08:43 PM dieselpro is that yours? damn i though mine looked good! that one owns!
SnowDrift 11-19-2008, 09:09 PM I think that one belongs to Canadian Rigger.
that nearly burns my eyes
WhiteK2500 11-20-2008, 01:20 AM Clean, Prime, Paint. It's pretty easy.
I took off my upper intake, and compressor housing for the turbo, and painted em both (suprise suprise) black. I used a high temp paint "Armor Coat" that my gf's father got for me, He works for Tremco (Makers of Tremclad, Canadian made rust paint) So I have 6 cans of that, and 6 cans of grey primer. (For those who remember the mock up stacks I made, those are painted with it too) The heat shield I painted long ago, I used duplicolor hi heat low gloss black (Same with the wheels too) But the Armor Coat matches pretty well to it. (The heat shield is DIRTY so the colours don't match in this pic, but clean, you can't tell.)
I thought I had a better pic of my engine bay with the intake painted, but I don't, so I'll go take one tomorrow, but for now you'll have to settle for a pic of my intake showing the compressor housing, and a tiny bit of the upper intake inlet. (Sorry bout the dirty bay :p:)
I used mineral spirits to clean up the intake, but mine wasn't all that messy to begin with.

awake1630 11-20-2008, 07:12 AM i wouldnt use mineral spirits. It is oil based. It will leave a residue. Use acetone it will make sure all the oil is off the manifold before painting.
Dennis Galligani 11-20-2008, 08:43 AM This is an engine paint from Autozone (valve covers). I thought I had a pic of my exhaust manifolds - I have them ceramic coated. However, I picked the color for the valve covers because it almost matched the manifolds. The ceramic coating is a little bit shinier.

mrsemi05 11-20-2008, 08:57 AM thats a good idea i didnt think of doing that cause i gotta do the head gaskets so i might as well paint it all up while its out

Good lord how many horsepower is that thing. I figure at least 20 to 40 horse for every piece that is painted are polished. By ricer rules that has to be at least 4 are 500 horsepower truck. :D:ro)

WOW! can you say over kill, oh and Dirtfarmer, on diesels, shiny stuff adds torque, so it's got to be cranking at least 1000 ftlbs.
IamDave0887 11-20-2008, 02:26 PM shiny stuff adds torque, so it's got to be cranking at least 1000 ftlbs.
):h that a good one. i hope dirty stuff doesn't take away torque. i'd be in trouble. i'm planning on polishing the heck out of my upper intake. right now its just somewhat clean, but the aluminum is still rough in texture. hopefully by the time i'm done it'll shine like chrome. i pln on doing the same to the compressor housing on the turbo. lower intake will most likely be painted with high heat 1200*F black.
rigwatcher 11-20-2008, 05:05 PM i did one a couple years back with duplicolor metalcast blue. Looked like those anodized fittings you see on drag cars etc.

did you put a primer before? and does this duplicolor last?
VWhauler 11-20-2008, 10:28 PM Why not just powdercoat?
rigwatcher 11-30-2008, 05:48 PM no didnt prime it at all, just cleaned and painted. i just saw my truck the other day, looks almost the same as the day i painted it 3 years ago.
matuva 11-30-2008, 05:56 PM Thanks! I will paint it metallic bright blue, with VHT caliper paint :D
matuva 12-06-2008, 11:19 PM So, I received the used F intake I bought at fleabay.
Here is what I did
Lower part, "as is" before clean up : 76592
upper part "as is" : 76594 after dewebing :76595
cut to the right length (6" less) : 76591 and cleaned, ready to paint : 76593
All parts have been cleaned using alloy wheel cleaner, brush and sweat ---
no primer.
first coat : unfortunately, due to security restrictions, I haven't been able to buy VHT or Duplicolor spay cans of bright blue, so I had to took this RS blue caliper paint from Europe..
76596 76597 76600
Second coat : 76601
Final product : 76598 76599 76602
Next, on the engine :D
HamOP 12-07-2008, 12:30 AM Nice job! Even looked really good after you cleaned it up before you painted it.
I guess it would be crass to ask why Ford Blue instead of Chevy Orange - So I won't ask ;)

ROFL I would have like the bright blue from Duplicolor, as I wanted it blue (cold) This blue is the only one I found.
I didn't realized it was close to Ford Blue. Argh!

Brain 12-08-2008, 01:47 PM I just found a use for my new powder coating gun. Now i just have to find a color that i like. Will post some pictures when i get it done.
CockDiesel 12-08-2008, 02:25 PM Hey Gents,
I can't find anything on af F intake,
what is the deal/benifit ?
thanks fellas
matuva 12-08-2008, 02:32 PM On a F intake, there's no EGR, so no gas recirculation pit inside. That way, the air flow goes really better and the engine breathes a lot better : no restriction to air flow.
Watch to pics I post previously : the inside of intake is empty---
CockDiesel 12-08-2008, 02:35 PM thanks alot,
so besides ebay, where could you find one?
or could you just mod your own?
what happens to the egr?
V/R
mattthebrat 12-08-2008, 08:50 PM On the S (half-ton) intakes, there is still a small divider where the egr was, the F inatke is just one big whole.
Green Machine 02-14-2009, 07:43 PM I love to bump old threads.. NOT :P
But I finally started on my intake and got a couple coats on it.
