: gotta twofer today both my diesels died - 03 & 95
tswartos 03-22-2005, 09:34 PM Yikes what a day my 03 DMAX and 95 6.5 decided to puke on me today.
The 03 spins but no spark and smells the garage with a fuel smell when I crank for a few minutes. New batteries in it, fuel filter was changed out when I took it to the dealer back in November and they said fuel pressure was fine before and after. They checked plugs and injectors..got to be an ECM or something any thoughts?
95 - stuttered and stopped in traffic three times today.Twice right after I started and only drove for a few minutes then totally died (crank but no spark) then again after driving it hard in traffic. Waited half an hour and started right up...after years of reading the forums...my guess its time for a new FSD/PMD. Any thoughts on somehting else?
duramaxdiesel 03-22-2005, 09:39 PM I'm betting on a fuel pump gone south for your '95.
tswartos 03-22-2005, 11:32 PM why pump and not PMD?
Silvy 03-22-2005, 11:52 PM Sounds like PMD from what i hear in other topics like that.
Scott C 03-23-2005, 09:29 AM Sounds like sabotage, two dead diesels in the same day?
mike634 03-23-2005, 09:49 AM Just a guess here, but if you fueled up from the same place within a short period of time, it could be bad fuel.
NCMIC 03-23-2005, 01:15 PM sounds to me on the 6.5td, it could be the lift pump or pmd. you can get a fsd/pmd cooler to see if it helps it.
as for the dmax, sounds to me like something with the ecm.
otherwise, maybe someone placed water in the tanks, by the gallons, to throw everything off. i hope noone would stoop that low, but you never know what others are thinking.
good luck.
tswartos 03-23-2005, 05:40 PM It crossed my mind as it fueled up within a few days of each other at my normal truck stop a flying j near my house. But the 95 kills like the electricity is jerked from it and the DMAX is in the shop...after I posted last night I thought I'd take a chance with OnStar and had them diagnose - nothing. Sent me over to ZGM Roadside...forgot I have free towing with my first year free coverage. So I had towed across town to another dealership. They've been in it since this morning and they're are following the warranty proccess to the T (according to them). They say its a fuel delivery problem as its getting fuel but not enough leaning towards a lift pump.
tswartos 03-24-2005, 11:31 AM 03 - they say they're switching out all the injectors so it'll take until next Tuesday for the injectors to show up.
95 - they said they can do it but it'll take just as long and they'll have to replace the entire injector pump. So I'll keep driving it until the 03 is done.
NCMIC 03-24-2005, 03:03 PM i would go to a diesel injection mechanic and get a second opinion on the 95. the dealer loves to replace the injection pump. i found on my old 95, the lift pump was the first problem. then a few months down the road, the pmd was causing issues. that's when they added the fsd/pmd cooler which bandaided my truck for another year.
now i'm in my 04.5 lly.
the lift pump throws same indications as the injection pump. ask them to make sure the lift pump is operating up to par. i would hate for you to be taken for all that money, if it turns out not to be the injection pump.
lomerill 04-03-2005, 12:08 AM I have a '95 I carry a spare lift pump and a spare PMD. According to the Diesel Page when the lift pump isn't working the PMD runs at higher temps, shortening it's life.
Part of the weakness of the lift pump is the oil pressure sender which supplys power to the lift pump, is also a weakness. I ran a power wire to the lift pump from an ignition circuit, bypassing the oil pressure sender. The truck starts better because the lift pump starts before the engine rather than after. My PMD is mounted on a FDS cooler so it is easier to change. I buy used PMD's from my diesel injection store for $100 CAN, they last almost as long as new ones and it's easy to carry a spare.

the easiest way to check the pmd is to pour cold water on it when the vehicle stalls,if it restarts right away replace pmd. also relocate it up higher there is kits available to do this. also remove the nice cover over the front of the engine it will help the pmd survive the heat
95 could be the pmd -- but take a fuel sample and check for water, it will drive the optical sensor nuts and kill it like that. also if you change the pmd get one from heathdiesel.com - bill is a great guy with phone support, i do a fleet and have bought several from him and only 1 failure over a year later and he backed it 100% and next day aired a new one...
tswartos 06-16-2005, 03:25 PM forgot to post updates:
'95 - dealer replaced pump...truck still under warranty so I wont do the PMD cooler until out of warranty
'03 - dealer replaced injectors
Thanks for your responses, I found a dealer that I can trust...lucky that I have access to a couple to choose from.
shelden27 06-17-2005, 08:11 AM Stock Duramax Doesn't Have A True Lift Pump It Has A Low Side Suction Pump That Is Part Of The Injection Pump.
