: Quicker Boost!

So I took a few friends for a ride tonight to see what they thought of the truck with the new tranny and Predator.

They were relatively impressed with the overall power (of course you know how guys are...could be better, etc. ).

Anyway, they all commented, and I agree that the spool-up time could be a lot quicker than it is now with the Predator top tune.

What's the best way to get boost quicker? I've heard that removing the cat, going to 4" exhaust, and disabling the EGR make for quicker boost, but is it considerable?

AFE stage II intake and 4" exhaust will cure that right up

I'm gonna start with the 4" exhaust I think. I'd rather not do any type of aftermarket air filter--I don't care for extra dirt in my engine.

Can you actually feel a difference with the AFE, or is it just an expensive whistle?

i have read both good and bad reviews about any of the intake kits. not sure its worth the money.

I have the AFE Stage II with the Pro Guard 7 filter and don't really see any difference with it in my 05. I also have a Magnaflow 4" cat back. I will be replacing the front pipe soon and hope to notice some difference!

Exhaust and EGR defeater. Get rid of the CAT. It all helped mine.

coyote, I think what needs replaced the most in the stock intake system is the plastic tubing... I used the stock filter box and filter and fabricated a 4" aluminum intake tube to cure that. I don't actually run the afe stage II, but I do know what it is an improvement over the stock system, except for filtering... maybe look in the for sale section and see if anyone has just the intake tube for sale, or if you are like me, just make one yourself.

My personal observation, but I dont think aftermarket intakes will help a whole bunch at the moment, some bit its marginal, all because the turbo is not stressing/starving the current intake for air.

Kelly,

As the other guys said, 4" exhaust, kill the cat, and do an EGR plate/stick, and you'll get boost from idle, also the whistle is really noticeable..

why the intake tube ?

I think the corrugation sp? in the tubing where it makes the bend does some funky things with the air flow...

Also, I'd have to double check but I think the AC Delco air filter has more pleats in it than the pro-guard 7. After a little bit of dirt and some good boost the AFE get a little restrictive...

Just had the 4" cool duals installed with no kitty and the turbo zings up there really fast. Awesome sound to boot, sounds like a jet engine! I didn't realize how much restriction the cat and stock exhaust was causing. JJ :)

Alright, I guess exhaust is the next thing on the "list" then. It seem to me like exhaust can actually offer quite a few benefits in this application as opposed to a lot of other applications.

Most of the time in the gas truck segment, it seems like exhaust is a $500+ expense that only changes the sound slightly and does very little for performance. Of course, you can't possibly have a "cool" truck with stock exhaust. Around here, a K&N along with exhaust automatically makes you a performance enthusiast.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Coyotekid,

Who ya kidding baby? ;) You've already done a SCIII to the tranny, sure you weren't just looking for an excuse to get that exhaust? ):h The truck sounds totally different with the MBRP cool duals with no kitty. There have been several post on this over the past few weeks so plenty of intel is out there. Later. JJ :)

From what Rolling Big Power told me is that they do not recommend the aftermarket intake on the 05 chevy hd's. They did a test and found out the truck runs better with the stock intake vs an aftermarket one.
