had nut saftey switch replaced two weeks ago everything ok untill this weekend.
make a long story short it has been at the dealer since sat. now they are saying it needs new trans gm told them to pull the pan, they pulled pan and found a lot of metal now gm will not let them replace, they are sending an engineer to inspect it anyone know why they would do that?
truck is stock with 17000 miles. 05 duramax w/allison tranny

they may be just reaching to see if any mods were done. plus if there is an issue of this severity, they may use it in order to research if there was any design flaw or just a bad tranny. it is for root cause analysis. that's my opinion as to why they would send an engineer. even if you had an extended warranty, tranny's and engines are expensive and a rep may come out to inspect for themselves.

If the truck is stock I would not worry.

I have not seen metal in an Ally pan unless it was detroyed, which is very, very rare. Thats why GM is coming to inspect. I would call bs on this also. Maybe we have an over zealous dealer here, ya think?

Allison failures are rare thats why they're sending an engineer. VERY few 05 Allisons have failed so far, thats why they want to see whats going on. The guy from Allison that comes out WILL check for mods.

From what I understand from the dealer when speaking to them about the new allisons, even if a sensor was blown in the tranny, they want to send the old tranny back and will send a new one just for research reasons to find out where any kind of malfunctions have come from. I mentioned that it would cause problems with the owner for travel inconveniences and their reply was, sorry but they need to get the product right.
This came from Sweeney Chevrolet in Ohio, also the same shop that took 3 current workers and a phone call to a previous diesel tech to find out a current part in my 6.5TD.
Makes you wonder.

dealer called me today said gm changed their mind they will not send the eng.
they were told to rebuild trans. now what? Do not like the idea of a rebuild
I paid to much money to have a rebuild at 17000 miles, I have an 82 suburban
k20 with 300,000 miles and a rebuilt trans at 155,000 miles and I only paid 4500$ for it in 1985, go figure.
If they rebuild will it hold up or just get them past my warranty.

I'm not sure what recourse you have here but you might want to think about an extended warranty. Maybe if you raise enough of a stink about it GM will give you one or give you a discount on one.

Typical procedure in these situations is to remove trans and perform a cost analysis of repair vs overhaul. If its cheaper to fix, then thats what its gonna be. All the beechin in the world may not do much here.
I remember back when I used to work in the stealer ( I can say that now) an 05 Grand Prix with 400 miles on it quit moving, tore it down and found that a snap ring in the input drum was not seated and come out and proceded to tear up some parts. Per cost to repair vs replace, it was repaired. Lady through a hissy as you would expect, but the only thing she got was a 60k warranty on the trans.

Gm can rebuild or replace the transmission anyway they wish, its their warranty. They can even put in a take out trans. Warranty is to put your vehicle back in perfect running order for the balance of the warranty.
