The other night I noticed that after being parked for several hours, my brake lights we on, thinking that someone was breaking into my truck I ran down there. No one was inside but my CURT brake controller box was freaking out....Blinking OC (off circuit). So I pulled the plug on my box and my brake lights went off. Any reasons on why my brake lights would have turned on? Maybe the brake controller is going bad?? I need to figure this out because I need my trailer brakes before next weekend, I'm afraid to plug it back in in-case it does it again I don't want it to drain my battery, because im not sure if or when it will do it again.

Sounds like your manual override lever on your brake control is going bad. Relatively common problem. Basically the controller thinks you are squeezing the manual lever so it is turning the brake lights on.

sounds like something wrong w/ the brake controller or possibly the wiring. I had a wiring problem where the ground wire was off on my Suburban, and every time I would put my left urn signal on, it would cause the trailer brakes to go on and off with the turn signal flashing. It also didn't do that until a few trips after I had gotten it installed.

It shouldn't be doing that if the trailer isn't hooked up though.

Ok well the trailer is not hooked up. If the manual over ride is going out will it do it just intermediately or will it do it all the time. I don't want to be driving down the road with my trailer and the brakes lock up.

Definately can be intermittent. I bet we've changed 20-25 brake controls for this problem.

Would it be safe to tow with it, if its acting up. And finally is there anyway to override the switch so if I do tow with it and it locks up I don't have to pull over and unplug the box.

Thanks

I wouldn't two with it if is acting up. Your brake lights (and trailer brakes) will be on if it malfunctions. On the one's we've worked with, the problem seems to be internal and not something that jiggling the manual override will fix.

I had the same prob with my controller. Mine has a remote man switch also & this was the prob. Unpluged it and all is well "for a while anyway."

Thanks guys got it all figured out, luckily there is a CURT manufacturer about 15 minutes away from my parents house so I went there this morning and they replaced it no questions asked. Now everything seems to be working fine.
