Just noticed on the way in to work this morning that the voltage meter on my 2004 2500HD was registering past the 19V mark. Hadn't noticed it before but that is not to say it hasn't existed prior to today. Replaced both batteries 2-3 weeks ago. When I turned the truck off this morning the volt meter dropped back to around 14V or so. Any ideas?

bad instrument cluster. Same thing happend to my dads 03 tahoe. The electrical system is fine, its just that the little stepper motors in the cluster get whacked out sometimes.

Not to hijack this thread, but why would my volt gauge read normal at 14 volts, but the battery light is on and the DIC always says BATTERY NOT CHARGING? Been like that for a while now. Ive checked it a bunch of times and the alternator is working fine, just annoying to see that battery light on all the time.

what rpm are you seeing these at ( idle?? )?? Did you use a electrolitic gel/paste on the terminals when the new batts were installed??

Any idea what the instrument cluster part number is for an '04 Chevy? I purchase replacement parts at www.1stchevyparts.com and for some reason they do not have the part number for this item.

Do you know how to use a soldering iron? You can replace the stepper motors in the cluster yourself for 5 or 10 dollars. Theres a DIY how-to guide on the forum here. New clusters can be 300+ dollars.

Plus someone (seller or dealer) has to reprogram the new cluster (not just the mileage, either). And GM has a special policy extending the coverage up to 7/70k miles on just such a problem. And the link to doing it yourself....... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140580&highlight=stepper
