Picked up about 100 gallons of vegetable oil. ONly problem is that it is old....not sure how old......but smells sour. This shouldn't be a problem right?

Are you making bio-diesel or running svo?

For bio, titrate the oil to see if it's usable.

I would ask your question here. I'm not an expert by any means but these folks are imo.

See what it titrates at first. If its less than 5 should be fine for Bio but above then you wind up having to use acid to reduce the titration levels so you can use it.Check it and post what it reads and what kind of lye are you using to process with.

If it is ransid as you said, it could have water contamination. Titrate it like said above and if it is below 5 make sure to dewater it.

i always dewater before i begin processing it. I have a batch in the dewater right now. Should I add some of the rancid oil to each batch? I use sodium hydroxide.

alright..tried to dewater and it almost turned into mayo. It not as bad as when you don't wash the diesel long enough but is a think white liquid. The top did look like grease with alot of fat in it.....any ideas?

If it turned to mayo because of water, then adding salt water is supposed to help break the emulsion. You could also heat the crap out of it but that will likely increase your FFA a little. I'd take some 1 liter samples and try some experiments.

i'm gonna try mixing some glycerin with it and see what happens....
