Howdy,

I've been trying to find some answers for upgrading my 1987 GMC Jimmy from a 2.8L Gas Engine to a 6.2L Diesel Engine. I found what I need for a diesel what transmission do I need for the Diesel. I doubt the transmission I have is capable of running off the diesel as it was designed for gasoline engines. Any help in helping me find this out will be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know this as soon as possible as I plan to upgrade my truck next month. Thank you.

Cheers :D

It will mate up with any tranny a 350 chevy will mate to. 700r4 or Tm400/4L80E SM465/nvg4500 but use the diesel flywheel/starter ps and hydroboost.

You're either talking about an S-10 Jimmy, or misinformed about which engine is really in your truck. I kinda doubt you could cram a 6.2 into an S-10, you would have to do some serious mods. If your talking about a fullsize, then you've either got a 305 or a 350, this would be a lot easier. Just like QM says, you would need a COMPLETE 6.2 engine, all the accessories, flywheel, starter, torque converter etc.
Are the engine mounts in the same place? I think you have to relocate those too, but I'm not sure.

Sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I'm fairly new here. I'm looking for an automatic transmission and I have an S-15 series Jimmy. I don't mind doing a lot of work. I watch the show Truck! on spike TV all the time but the guys never give what type of transmission I'd need for the engine. I'm very sure that the mounting is the same. I have a manual for the S-15 Jimmy and says that it can have either the 2.8L Fuel Injection Gasoline engine or the 6.2L GM Diesel Engine.

Again, I apologize for not giving enough information. Thanks for the help guys. ;)

Cheers :D

If you can stuff a 454 in an s10 why not a 6.2l/6.5L TD?
700r4 would be the easiest fit as the 4L80E is larger.

???You can sqeeze a 454 in an S10??? where do you put it, in the bed?? ;)

I can't see that tranny handling a 2.8 OR a 6.2L diesel, if you go auto, the 700R4 is a perfect match for the 6.2 IMHO, low first gear for quick take off, and lock-up OD for good mileage, definitely want to use a 10-bolt Dana 44 rear with 3.42 gears. If you go manual, I would look for an NV4500.

There is a guy on pirate4x4 with a 5.9 Cummins in a newer S10 like a 97 so the 6.2 will fit

There is a guy here at the local track that has a 454 in a Chevette! He has been running it the last few years. The tail shaft of the tranny was directly connected to the rear end by a U-Joint.

Gale Banks put one in a Dakota, with SERIOUS mods, not much Dakota left when he was done.

Get the 700R4 for that truck. That way you will have the best 1st gear in an auto and OD for crusing. These transmission operate without any computer as does your 6.2. That should be one sweet setup when finished.

That's the kind of answer I was looking for. You guys must remember that an S-15 is different from an S-10. S-15 will be much harder to work on due to the re-inforced steel. This is the SUV series and is the mid-size S-15. I'd like to take a picture of it but I have no way of implementing it into my computer.

Thanks for the help though!! Really appreciate it!

Thank you!! Now I have two people telling me the 700R4 is the best transmission. I know I do have a 700 series transmission but I do not know if it is the R4. I kept getting strange answers from different transmission repair shops around town. Again thank you.

Drivetrain.com, TCI and others have really nice diagrams on how to identify trannies, tcases, ect.

rvvae,

I have had 3 of the S-10/S-15's and did smallblock conversions on 2 of them.
You definatley want the 700R4 however, since you are coming FROM a 2.8 let me fill you in on what I learned years ago:

There are 2 versions of the 700R4, a heavy duty (with 90 degree bellhousing) and a light duty (with a 60 degree bellhousing for the 2.8/3.1) You CAN get an adaptor to use the 2.8 tranny with your 90 degree engine but there is a couple other things to take into consideration. The LD 700R4 has HALF the clutch disks and a muuuuch lighter duty 1st/reverse band.

With a diesel torque monster (compared to the 2.8) your LD 700R4 will not last long at all. I would suggest getting one actually from a smallblock.

You probably already know about the site, but if you don't.. might I suggest you visit Jags That Run who specialize in smallblock conversions in many vehicles. I don't feel guilty giving the link since it wouldn't take biz from any of our vendors on here. http://www.jagsthatrun.com

Good luck! I can say a 305 or 350 in a Jimmy/Blazer is one awesome upgrade. I can't even imagine a diesel in it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif

Thank you very much for the heads up. I did find out that I do have a 700R4 transmission in my truck. Very nice for you to pop that answer in for me. I have taken that into consideration and understand the difference between the two transmission. Thanks again and I greatly appreciate it.

ME either BUT I love the 6.2's engines. I would lean toward using a 93 6.5 TD with manual injection with the 700R4 for a non elect. auto transmission ( from a 6.2 or V-8 oh course). Still as sweet as that 6.2 Vette I saw somewhere around the web.

I was thinking how cool it would be to mate a 6.5 TD with a 4T80E in a '96+cadillac 'till I thought about emissions. How is a vehicle that came with a gas engine going to be treated at state inspection time?

Anything would be an improvement on the 2.8. I threw rods on 3 motors in 2 different s-10s both 4speeds 1 was 4wd. Thats when I bought my blazer with 50k on the odo for $20k in '98. My first auto but the 4l80e has changed how I feel about autos. 245k on the clock now and nothing but filters fluid and sensors changed.
