I would really like to make my truck have a loud whistle. I already have it straight piped and I think a 4" downpipe would really help. Who makes a downpipe for the LLY???

MBRP makes a 4" front pipe. It's not really the down pipe, but it is what everyone calls it.

Akrapovic750,

Got'em sitting here looking for a home, they are kitty retirement pipes! They use a 4 bolt flange just like the stock pipe so it's a bolt in deal!

the down pipe comes directly off the turbo itself and will probably never have a replacement. its pressed, twisted, and everything else so it will fit in the space provided.

the front pipe is the front most pipe and it connects to the down pipe.

so there are no aftermarket down pipes for the duramax, just down pipe back exhaust systems??? i am slightly confused my powerstroke exhaust was a lot easier to understand

Downpipe, frontpipe both of these are the same on the duramax. It is the pipe infront of the bolt flange. That pipe runs straight out of the turbo to that flange all one piece, with a Cat welded on it too. It's a ***** to get out, just cut that kitty apart, pull er out and slide the new downpipe in place minus the kitty of course.

there is a difference in the down pipe like Briano said. Question is, Does anyone sell or has tryed to make a bigger down pipe??? I know that it would be hard to install thats for sure! I think if you measure the shape of that thing, it would equal out to a 3" pipe which is killing us!! Would be nice to have 4" right out of the turbo. thats why the fords get so much whine.

I don't care about hard to install or hard to manufacture, because I can solve those problems (use tiny persons with tiny hands, small tools, and big hammer - LOL), but I would like to know what increasing the pipe down from the turbo to the kitty pipe or flange would do for the LLY. Yeah, I know, theory, but some of you characters are pretty smart and have a lot of practical knowledge. Sooooooo - for a everyday use vehicle with maybe a small chip and 4" exhaust, what do you think increasing the pipe down from the turbo would do for you.
1. Lower EGT's?
2. Increase mpg significantly (more than 1 mpg)?
3. Would the kitty have to go also, or would gutting it be enough?

Inquiring mind would like your thoughts!

the problem is there is no room at all for the true down pipe. There is literally 2" of space between the turbo and the firewall so the down pipe comes off the turbo almost rectangle shaped and is pressed and curved to not hit the firewall...

IF there was room to install a true 4" down pipe then I am sure the aftermarket would have it already and we would all benefit from it. I have no doubt temps would go down, power would go up, etc ,etc..

On other turbo applications like race cars this turbo down pipe and front pipe are actually only one pipe since they have the room to make it only one pipe.

one of the techs posted a picture of the actual down pipe a while back, been trying to find it again..but you can plainly see the problem.

I'm running just the MBRP front pipe, love the whistle, If you do the install remove the suport bracket first, Much easier to get the clamp off the turbo reach up between the fender skirt and the frame with a deep socket also un plug the connector at the back of the tranny makes its easier to get at the bolt on the bracket.

I think I also remember reading something on trying to make a new downpipe but I can't remember who it was. hope they jump in here shortly.

ssduramax,

They are T-409 stainless steel just like the stock exhaust system is made from.

Is the MBRP 4" pipe any better (performance wise) than a stock LB7 kittyless pipe?

When you run an LLY Duramax with no cat or muffler, the turbo becomes real apparent. At WOT, it sounds like a jet taking off.

can you bolt the front pipe to the factory cat back system? What would this sound like?
