I Called A Local Ally Trans Shop Thats Been Doin Ally Work For Around 30 Years For A Quick Question. The Only Thing I Was Wanting To Know Was How Much It Was To Change The Fluid And External And Internal Filters.
This Guy Tells Me There Is Not A Filter On The Inside Of The Tranny And Goes On To Tell Me That Somebody Dont Know What They Are Talking About If They Told Me So. Am I Crazy???? Isnt There One Inside The Trans Also?

IIRC there is one inside but Allison says it does not need regular maintenance - only needs to be changed during a rebuild.

There is one but it dosnt really "filter" much per se. Its made to stop the trans from sucking bug chunks. The manual only calls for it to be changed at time of overhaul. The spin on filter is made to really do the "filtering"

They nailed it, the internal pickup (which only contains a metal screen) is labeled as a "filter" in the parts system. Unless you have suffered some massive mechanical failure or have changed pan depth - this is a "lifetime" part. When I first bought my Dmax, I wanted a spare spin-on for the Allison. I went to the parts desk and the guy looked on his little microfilm unit and brought out a big box about 1 foot square. It was the internal pickup unit. I said, "no, I want a *filter*" and he said "that's the only one." Then I showed him a picture in the brochure of the underside of a 3500 and said - "I want one of those little RED FILTERS there!" He fumbled around and finally decided that they didn't have one in stock. Good thing, really, they were asking $39 for a part you can get from an Allison dealer for $9.
