i am looking to purchase a 2002 chevy duramax. i just have a few questions. the one im looking at is a black crew crab, and it has around 47,000 miles on it. it. it has leather, power seats, and is pretty much loaded. the dealer is asking 28500 for it. this will be my first vehicle that I purchase by myself, so i was wondering what would yall consider a fair price to pay for this truck? how much should i be able to get the dealer to lower the price? i am kinda worried about buying such a big truck considering what the gas market might do, but i need 4wd. i could just get a jeep, but all my friends with jeeps claim that they get around 18mpg, so from what i have read the duramax should not be that far off. so basically what im trying to find out is, what would be a fair price for the truck? if you need any more info let me know. thanks a bunch. this place is great.

Look at www.KBB.com (http://www.KBB.com). I think last time I looked, my '02 with roughly the same mileage and options was worth 25700 on trade, and 28500 private party. Yes...big ouch on trade in, but that could give you some room to barter.
Get the VIN and PM GMCSID or Cobra for the vehicle info (look in "Ask the Techs")

i paid 25,500 for my 02 set up like the one you are looking at. KBB on it was 30,000 but this one had 74,000 miles when i bought it. Fuel mileage is actually better than 18mpg if you dont run the truck hard and keep highway speed under 70

Does the truck you are looking at have 4wd? If so offer about $3000 less.
I used to have a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 and it always had a steady 12 mpg. Unless they have the v6 I would call bs on their claim.

Yeah I would say so. You are dealing with a dealer and they are in it as a buisiness so they are not going to give this to you as if you are there nephew. They are going to make money on this deal. But if you offer less then what they ask you can negiotiate the price better with two diferent numbers, and forget a about using a trade in.
