This is my first diesel truck so heres my question does a diesel take longer to warm up than a gas engine? I have noticed that my gauge and my edge dont match on temp, so I beleave the edge. Since it's cooled off some 30's to 40's at night my truck runs cooler, 185 driven and stop for a 30 sec's its down around 178 is that normal?

edge reads the temp right from the bus so it's more accurate versus the dash ananlog gauge. and yes it takes longer for diesels to warm up especially when it's cold.

my truck wouldn't even reach operating temperature on the way to work when it got cold. use and additive in your fuel as well

Yep - completely normal. That's why these trucks with leather seats come with heated seats - you could freeze your butt off waiting for the engines to generate any cabin heat.

The ECT gauge is programmed to lie to you... so you are right to not believe it.

Welcome to the club... hope you enjoy your new truck!

I only drive 10 miles to work, so if I need the defroster to be effective in real cold weather, I need to first idle/high idle/use the winter covers/or plug it in, sometimes all those tricks. Otherwise I'd never get heat...and my tranny temp gauge sometimes never even moves. Brrrrrr. Wish my seats were heated. You can forget just turning the key and flying to work on those running late days, but its good...this truck has actually cured me of the running late habit. Below 30* F, or on snowy days anyway.

As Randy recently said on another thread:

You really need to read TxC's thread entitled "Dash Temp Gauge - Revealed". It's an eye-opener... here's a link:

In the graph you'll see why the gauge often stays just to the left of 210*F . . . because the actual ECT is anywhere between 190*F and 218*F.
