so i was changin my oil tonight and got everything done put new oil back in and when i went to go check the oil level, i saw that the end of my dip stick where it tells you how much oil you have in the engine was holding on by one strand of wire. now everyone has noticed that the end of the dipstick is held on by alot of wires twisted together. so i didnt put it back in bc i was afraid that it would break off then i would be in a world of trouble. so i cut it off and put the stick back in. my question is this..i wanna check the level of the oil(i know its gotta be close bc of the amount of oil i put in) but all my friends have LBZ motors is thier dip stick the same lenght as a LLY? i cut it off at the weight near the end and dummy me drop it between the floor boards of my barn so i really cant tell how long it used to be.:(

If you put 10.5 qts. in then your at the correct level. The dipstick you have now is just a plug to keep dirt out. You need to get a new one in order to see what your correct level is at. The LBZ dipstick should be the same, but don't hold me to it.

yea thats why i cut the end off and stuck it back in there. um to be honest im not 100% sure on how much oil i put in i know that sounds dumb but i bought 3 gallons of oil and but alittle bit over 2.5 gallons in. is that close?

2.5 gal. = 10 qts. You should be fine.

2 1/2 gal would be 10 qts. I'd say your pretty close.

Edit: :o: csmartindale beat me to it.

Does anyone know why this problem is happening? Seems like the stick is touching something inside the engine and it's burning through the wire. This has happened twice to me now. Once at about 30k miles and again at about 150k.

The dealer.

The first one had gone through and broke. When I pulled the stick to check the oil, I noticed it pulled out funny. Looked and the end was missing, a clean break. The second time, it had a divot in the wire, like it was sitting against something hot and burning through. Had not separated yet, thankfully.

did the dealer find the end or is it still floating around the engine

They got it out.

How? Did they show it to you or just say they got it out? It would be very lucky for the end piece to be sitting right on top of the drain plug.

Yes I saw it. They pulled the pan and there it was. The oil pump is encased basically and will not allow any large objects to be drawn into it.

There's other threads on this with guys who are running their trucks with the piece still sitting in the pan. I had it removed because I was under warranty and they covered it.

Anyone have an aftermarket on this one? I never had any problems with mine, but I've never been a fan of the rope. I think GM isn't aware some people check their oil on every fill up just like dad used to do.
