Hopefully some of you who use your trucks for work will know the answer to this question. I am going to be buying a D/A for business (I'm a computer consultant so I deliver equipment, install networks, etc. Could get away with a 1/2 ton buy why? :-) ). The question is, since the truck is registered in the company's name I need a commercial insurance policy. I have been quoted anywhere from 1900 to 2300 per year and I have a very clean record. Is this typical? I can insure the truck personally for about 1200+- a year, so its like 600+ more just because its commercial. Just looking for input, hopefully this is in the right forum :-)

Commercial insurance is more because they expect you will be driving more miles and in congested areas.

if it your own business ( this sucks but works ) it will be a bigger write off at tax time for business operation expenditures. if you ever get into a accident any law suits will be against the business first then to you personally rather than directly to you on a regular/combo reg plate

My insurance company tried selling me a commercial policy but I don't need one. They told me it is based on the GVW

BS!!!!!! you can get comm plates on any car/truck/van. its when you go to DMV and tell them that the owner of the vehicle is "XXXXX",LLC/INC./CORP is when they say that you need to run comm plate in that the vehicle will be used to conduct business/make money for the owner/provide retail services ( ext. ), not for private use; .e to/from work/beach/grocery store
some states allow pickup trcuks to run combo plates in that it may be used for personal use and sometimes for hauling of "stuff". i have sean guys running combo plates on cars after the've traded in the old truck for a new/used car

I have commerical ins on 3 vehicles and it is not that much. Actually i think it is cheaper than my regular ins. Now the plates are higher being around $340.00 for 26000lbs

mine is rolled into my General Policy. I have 1mm General policy cover the office, two service trucks and my PU.
what bit me that I did not think about was the truck is now a business "asset" so taxed by the county. would not be on the personal side... but I think the cost of operating off set that.

RI says you can only run Combo plates on vehicles with a GVW of less than 8600lbs. I had combo plates on my 1/2 ton.
