Hi my suburban began a new trick. While driving it either stalls or goes on to limp home. Either way the ses light comes on. This first seemed to happen only at higher rpm. Now all the time. The truck has a new about 6 months old PMd.Not yet on my profile. Upon diagnositcs codes17 18 35 36 39 54. Proceded to clear codes and took a ride truck stalled and restarted with ses and the following codes17,18,36. Diagnostic check list:
Engine cranks and starts, when stalls no loss of instuments,Turbo inlet clean, ses on once problem ocurrs, ses on when cranking,95,miles 188000. dont know whats been replaced except PMD and lift pump &ops batteries fuel filter and starter.codes above,Fuel filter new, batteries new matched,Radiator hose does not get hard fast, some white smoke due to 1 bad glow plug,Once problem occurs and ses comes on harder to start. No heavy smoke on hard acceleration,no egr,2500 series,#2 dieselfuel,no additives ,live in ny,no other service history,no excessive vacuum when open tank, remote PMd with ground by pump mounted on bumper bought harness recently checked resistence of pmd cable. Any help would be great thanks Pete

Sounds almost IP related...

Code 17: Fuel temperature sensor
Code 18: Fuel temperature sensor/cam referance problem
And Code 36: Ignition pulse width fault

Earlier stored codes are:

Code 35 is the same as 36,
This book I have doesn't list a 39,
And Code 54 is Power Control Module (PCM) fuel curcuit problem.

Is 95 a code you get when cranking? I didn't understand that part.

"Start, Stalls" is often due to a weak/dead LiftPump. So , a good thing is test the LPs pressure and output flow.
A crude check is to start engine , let idle. Then check pressure at the filter drainhose up by the thermostat cover. Or , just open the valve to this drain hose and observe whether the engine stalls. If it stalls , the LP is probably weak/bad. If it continues to idle with the filter drain valve cracked open , the LP may be OK , but might want check flow/pressure.

I think sometimes a clogged fuel filter will give symptom , so that's a cheap first step.
[the filter drops the pressure below the FuelInjectionPumps' 'comfort zone'].
