A buddy of mine just asked me if I knew much about the 99 diesel. I did not have much for him but I said I would post for him here.

He is looking at a 99 Chevy Dually with 100k on the engine. No problems with the engine or drive train right now. The owners asking price is 1,800.

What should he be looking at or concerned with?

If the price is only $1800, and the body is in good shape, he should be concerned with buying stolen property...

Seriously, for a 99 with only 100k on the clock, everything is fixable. As long as the drivetrain is OK now, no STP and Bananas in the oil to quiet down the knocks, then buy the thing.

Like I said, assuming the body is allright.

He said it has a little tree rub on it, but nothing major. So as long as everything looks good...go for it?

He told me the tree rub doesn't bother him.

Mine's not a dually but I have had good sucess with my 3/4 ton. Relocate the pmd for sure if it hasn't been done. I have Heath Diesel's. I have 160k on mine. Just had a an oil analysis doen & everything checked out fine. It doesn't have the power of the Dmax, Powerstroke & Cummins but she does what I need it to do. Parts are quite reasonale too.

I would suggest do any engine oil analysis. It should give you a pretty good idea of the condition of the engine. They are noted for head gasket, cracked heads, cracked block. Any engine work done?? IP, injectors, glow plugs. At 100k they all may still be stock so I would expect to have to replace them sometime soon.

Check the front driveshaft for the 4 wheel drive. Again mine is a 3/4 & not a dually but I stipped the spline in mine. Tried to find a second hand one first & could not. Reman one was $400.00. Everyone told me they are noted for going. From what I can tell this is the third one for my truck. May not be a problem with a dually. I'm not sure.

For that price unless it is an absoulte price of junk it is defiently worth it.

Good luck.

$1800 and he's hesitating? A body/frame/interior in good shape with no engine or transmission is worth that.

I'd jump all over it, depending on body/interior condition, and not worry about the engine. However, he should hope for the best; plan for the worst. In other words, don't expect to get a perfect truck for $1800. It likely has issues. Could be as simple as a PMD or as bad as cracks in the engine. I'd still be all over $1800. He can replace the engine and trans and still have a good deal. ...not necessarily a re-sellable deal, but a good-running truck to keep.

Have you priced used Duramax trucks? They're ridiculous in comparison.

Around here a running 6.5 engine goes for$2500 or more with no mention of miles. Sounds like a great deal to me.

a 99 6.5 is worth that much even if there was something wrong with the drivetrain. I would of paid on the spot before the owner of it wises up.
