I bought a used '03 Duramax with an Allison Transmisssion. The speedometer is doing the GM dance.....all up and no down! I heard there is/was a recall on this. Any advice? Also, if I am out of the warranty period, does someone know of a good and reputable shop in the DFW Texas area?
Thanks

I received a letter from GM a while back stating the Instrument cluster had an extended warranty on it. I do not remember the exact duration, but I believe it was something like 75,000 or 100,000 miles and I believe it also had a 7 year time limit. I did not keep the letter as the dealer had just replaced my unit on an extended warranty the previous owner had purchased and transfered to me. I would call the dealer and get a copy of the letter and make your choice from there. Good Luck.

Check out the GM #07187B:Special Coverage Adjustment-Instrument Panel Cluster
I copied & pasted the info on the '03s. It covers them for 7 years/70k which ever comes first.
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 31100001 31412794
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3E100001 3E381150
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3F100001 3F259060
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3M100001 3M112290
2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3Z100001 3Z361857
I had mine replaced at 95k under the coverage adjustment above. I think they are being lenient on the mileage because the issues are so widespread.

Good luck,
Rich

Wish I would have seen this before I had mine fixed. How long do they hold up?

I had this happen to my 03, and was going to fix it using the steps in the DIY, but found out that the recall lasts for 7 years or 70,000 miles, which i just made it under, everything was free, didn't cost me a dime, figured i couldn't beat that

Never redone one yet. It appears as if "quality control" let a pretty big batch of defective stepper motors through. When servicing the cluster, before setting each needle to zeroed and marking the position, gently sweep eaach needle clockwise first. If it binds at all, it's goin' bad. If it's smooth, it'll outlast the truck. So, there is no need to change all 7.

3 of the ones I did were exchanged units provided by GM under warranty that failed again. And two of those took at least two tries by the dealer to get them flashed right. I can't have truck problems like that, so I did them myself.
