: Will a 98 swap into a 97?

I am able to get a used 6.5 out of a 98 half ton and I am wondering if it will bolt right in, and if all of the electrical connectors will work in the 97?

Thanks

Chris

I assume your swapping all your accessories, but for all practical intents and purposes the two are identical.

Are you looking at a complete engine with accessories or just a longblock?

"S" code K1500/2500 to "S" K1500/2500 no problem; "F" 1500/2500 to "K" 1500/2500 can be done but not as simple a swap; which way you going, BTW I'm in Australia traveling might need one of the other guys to fill you in what I mean. back in USA 22nd if you don't get an ans that make sense PM me.

It is a complete engine with all accessories.

I will have to check what codes the engines are. I assume I can find mine out on the VIN number...what digit is it.

How do I check it on the other engine (it's all ready out of the truck).

It will have an EGR on top of the intake if LD or not if HD. The HD set-up is an improvement but the ECM should be switched too.

8th digit of the VIN.

Thanks everyone, the help here is great!:D

It turns out that the 98 donor truck is a 3/4 ton with the 'F' VIN. My 97 has an 'S' VIN. Will the motors still swap? What will need to be changed, anything about the computer that will be different?

Chris the harnesses will swap but you need a F PCM so you don't throw codes for EGR equipment that isn't hooked up, or if you are in an emissions check state, use the engine and swap over the EGR stuff from your 97 to the 98 block it will direct bolt on. Need MAF, upper & lower intake, and 3 solenoids drivers side rear of the engine

Only LD ECMs look for MAF sensor input right? So neither engine will have one.

Unless I read it wrong he indicated original engine was an 97 S (LD) engine so that should have a MAF unless 98 S was 1st year to get that, then if that were the case he would not have a MAF but would have the rest of the EGR sensors, and need to convert to that if in a emissions check state. But depending how far individual states take new EPA regs slated for 2006 implimentaion he may not have any choice but to reconfigure as original equipment by VIN configuration.

Only LD ECMs look for MAF sensor input right? So neither engine will have one.Well, my 97 is a light duty (code S) right? The donor engine is a heavy duty (VIN F).

If I move all of my stuff from the 97 to the 98 like has already been suggested, will I have to change the ECM or will the truck work with the 97 ECM?
Thanks

I am not in an emissions testing area, but I would prefer to keep the EGR stuff if it means that I will not have to change the ECM at all.

Then you will need to keep the 3 solenoid bank and all the vacuum hoses, EGR, and your upper/lower intakes.

The EGR stuff would be the first stuff to go If I was doinf thie swap. But I don't like the mess it causes in the intake. But That's just my .02 cents worth

Thanks everyone. From what I have read, if I move the solenoid bank, all of the EGR stuff, and the upper and lower intakes I should be ok without changing the ECM at all. This is correct right?

yup ;) You do know that you can make it still 'look' like your EGR works but make in non-functional right? It will help keep your motor stay cleaner on the inside, and a little more power to boot. Just put the intake manifold gaskets for an 'F' engine under your 'S' and nobody but you will know the difference, not even the computer.

I had no idea. I guess the EGR ports just get blocked off right? If you say the SES light won't be triggered, then I might give that a shot. Thanks!

Pre-98, works like a champ, 98+ can't do it so consider yourself lucky ;)

OH contriare TDG EGR bypass is quite possible on 98+ just gotta do it a little differently, not that I would know anything about that :D
