I have a small leak near my oil filter, it actually looks like its coming from above the filter. Is there a common place where these leak from or will I just have to investigate?

I also seem to have some sort of leak in that area.It looks damp and if it sits in the garage for a week it leaves a dime size spot.Looks like it is coming from somewhere on the top rear of the motor.

Guess I gotta take the inner housing off and check it out!

tighten your oil filter first, sometimes that may be the culprit. Maybe whoever performed your oil change last may not have tightened it all the way. no biggie, i have done it before so i have an idea of this, and believe me you need to tighten these filters pretty good!

Well I have had a few different filters on this truck (AC Delco when my dad bought it, Fram when he was to lazy and had a shop do it, and I use Napa Gold[Wix] and once a Pro Select after I bought it from him) and there is always a little leak. I get them as tight as I can with two hands and they are always tight when I take them off with a wrench. It does look like it comes from above.

I had a leak once where it would drop dime sized amounts of oil whenever I stopped. I took it back to the place where I changed oil and they said they could see a problem but could not determine the source. Since I was under warranty, I took it to the dealer and they determined that it was leaking around the filter. You had to clean it off and run the engine to determine the true source. I took it back to where I get my oil changed and they replaced the filter and topped off the oil (not cheep since I run full Synthetic.) It was a defective gasket around the filter.

Now before I go on any long trips I make sure that the oil is changed a couple of weeks in advance...

Yea well I'm gonna clean, check it and let everyone know. I too run full synthetic and will soon be Amsoiling the whole thing so I will make sure It has no leaks!

Took another look today and it seems to be coming from above the lower oil pan. There is an allen head bolt on the upper half of the pan that seems to be the culprit. If I tighten it up a little to you think that may seal it up. Also does anyone have the torque specks for the allen head bolts? Dont want to snap them.

Ok I'm getting back to my thread because I did an Amsoil dual bypass system and I didn't want any oil leaks. So I checked all the plugs on the filter housing with the allen heads, but they were tight. There were two other plugs near the filter, I think they were 22mm and I opened them up and put teflon tape on the threads. The allen head bolts wouldn't budge but these came out and you have to watch because there are springs plungers behind them like they are relief valves. After sealing them up it looks good so far with no leaks Ill keep checking. Ill post if I still have the leaks.
