Is this true? If you buy a predator, not matter what you do you can not use it on a second vehicle? I too would be upset.

They definately should rethink that option. The only reason I can think of to lock it to one truck is to sell more units. I think it will end up doing the opposite for them.

I have been inquiring about the hypertech 111 for my truck.

It seems like these units marry up to your VIN# and cannot be used on any other vehicle.

Does anybody no if this is true .

It makes a lot of sense as far as the manufacturers of these units.

One unit for one vehicle makes good buisness sense.

I think that is the case. I recall on one of the boards someone said that DS wouldn't do anything to help them out and the internals of the programmer had to be replaced as it could not be cleared via software. Probably an e-mail to DS could clarify the situation.

I would agree a tuner should only allow flashing 1 truck at any given time ... that is a tuner shouldn't allow flashing more then one truck at a time ... but to restrict use to a specific truck doesn't make sense to me.

If I bought a tuner and didn't like it for whatever reason, I should be able to return my truck to stock (removing whatever updates the tuner had done) and sell it to someone else who wanted it.

Restricting use to a specific VIN would be like buying tires/wheels for a truck where the tire store did something to ensure they could only be mounted on your truck and they could never be mounted on another vehicle, sold, etc.

Purchasing a performance tuner from any one but a reputable source could be a waste. If the unit is not in a factory sealed container it may be a worthless unit. Even $0.01 would be to much plus shipping.

The guy has the right to bitch but it does say right in the instructions it will "Marry" the vin .... I'm sure if he contacts Diablo Sport with his vin now, with proof he was the oringinal purchaser, they will change .....

Still funny nevertheless .....

Have used a Hypertech tuner in the past. They program their unit to where it can only handle one vehicle at a time. To use on a second vehicle, the second must be the same make and model as the first and the first must be returned to stock program. After using my unit for a couple of years I traded vehicles and sent the tuner back to Hypertech to be reprogrammed. Doing so cost much less than buying a new one. Would strongly suggest predator consider the same.

I have heard otherwise, that the Predator can be unlocked with just software and isnt that hard to do.

Maybe Predator was trying to save the user from himself as the Predator probably saves the OEM tune while a HP tune is downloaded to flash. I could imagine handing the unit off to another user and losing an OEM tune forever. If that's the excuse, there are more flexible ways to save OEM tunes and use VIN locks.

As a power option, I never gave the Predator a consideration.

Yep, I already did last night ... haven't heard anything.

Mac, so the instructions inform the "owner" (Note, person has already bought the thing if he's reading the instrucitons?) of the marrying the VIN ...is this also pointed out outside of the instructions (advertising, etc.) that would make a "potential" buyer aware of this?Edited by: tophog

Hey I understand and agree 100% ....It would take nothing to put a sticker right on the tool itself or the outside wrapper .... They don't advertise the fact that it's a one owner forever that much but I've seen it advertised in that way .... Alot of people have and will be turned off by for that reason they don't .... That's why these forums are great info highways ....

Couple things come to mind tho .....
1) It's cheap for a Real Time data reader, code eraser with performance tunes, speed limit defeat, tire resize calibration ....
2) It retains a stock ECM program .... Could come in handy ....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
3) Has anyone contacted Diablo directly and said hey " I bought this NEW to use on my 01,I purchased and now want too run it on my 03 ..... If I provide receipt and new VIN will you help me out ?? "
4) They offer a 30 day return policy after you had the chance to read the instructions ....

Mine just kicks around in my truck and I never use it as a tuner ..... So I'm no big promoter just stating the facts .... Some people realy like it ,simple to use ,effective and cheap,That and I paid $300 beans for mine ,so I aint bitching if I can't sell ...
