After market air flow system and 4" exhaust. Which one needs to be done first? I was told by a mechanic to do the exhaust first cause the air flow system will be restricted until I do?:help:

You'll get more gains out of the exhaust, plus sound better. I'm still deciding if I'm going to bother with an aftermarket intake, or simply fabricate something that will work between the stock air box and turbo.

Filter, chip, exhaust and forget the intake. JMHO Later! Frank

the intake gives you nothing except for louder turbo sounds. the exhaust will lower your egts, quicken the turbo spool up time, make turbo spools louder which all would be the best bang for your buck.

as for the air filter, the stock AC Delco is the best you can get. but if you put alot of miles on it, you can go with a rechargeable air filter to fit your box. you can modify your box per kennedy's website, www.kennedydiesel.com . look under tech tips to see what he has going on.

you could get a predator programmer to up horse power, modify for tire sizes, dignostics and check injector balancing. this would cost you a few bucks more than an intake.

think about what you want to spend your money on.

NCMIC,
I think you may be wrong about the exhaust. The less restrictive intake allows the turbo to spool up faster and also inhanses the turbo whine. The exhaust does allow for lower EGT's and it also allows for less back pressure which I believe would make the turbo spool up slower becuase it has to get the pressure back up.
Too big of exhaust and you could have problems when towing a heavy load going down a hill and need the back pressure to slow you down, but the exhaust manifold on these trucks is the limiting factor after you get above the 4" exhaust.

akdiesel, interesting. i would have to see. i know when i lost my kitty, i lost my turbo lag. hence, spool up time was quicker as i got a quicker response time. but i may be wrong on it. i know the intake enhances the turb whine as you lose the turbo silencer. i do recall a test that was done in one of the other threads stating that the aftermarket intake only gave you the whine.

hdinnc, i live in Fuquay Varina. I used to live in Apex. There is a custom exhaust shop in Apex called R&J's custom exhaust. They are located on Williams St., behind the Accupuncture area. Go around back and not on the side that EMR Wings is. Its on the other side behind the Tire Shop side. He can make and bend exhausts 3.5" and 4". Otherwise, Mr. Engine on Miami Blvd, in Durham, does all kinds of mods.

Good luck and have fun with any of your choices you make for your truck.

R&J's is where I went for the exhaust quote. More money than I anticipated but we'll see.

I would get exhaust first. I see a bunch of guys on these forums with high performance trucks running stock intake or swiss cheese intakes. Super Diesel ran a 700hp, 1400tq run with a stock filter, so it isn't hurting our trucks too much. JMO. The only reason I got an intake is because it helped my gasser a lot and I figured it would help the Duramax too. I guess I should have researched it first and saved my money!! Get a turbo back exhaust...it is worth every penny. MBRP makes one heck of a system (aluminized,409 stainless, and 304 stainless). Goto www.DPSdirect.com. They are a supporting vendor and have a great site. I just got an EGR plate from them. Also check out www.dieselperformanceparts.com. Mark Craig is awesome for cust. service and answering questions. They are a supporting vendor too.

I did my own intake basically cut the airbox off and put a filter with a 4" outlet directly on it. i noticed a gain from the exhaust which i did first and noticed a little quicker spool on the turbo with the filter. Total price of install 40.00 for the filter.
