: New Flash for the LLY???
freddyo 03-18-2005, 12:48 PM I took my rig in to the dealer yesterday for the common smoke and rough idle issue w/ the #4 balance rate at +14. One of the techs said that there was a re-flash out to deal with this problem. I told him that I had last fall's but he said that there was a more current one not associated with any SB's.
Has anyone else heard of this or was the tech blowing a little smoke of his own?
Thanks.
Cobra#3747 03-18-2005, 01:23 PM whats your vin?
Tuckaleechee DMax 03-18-2005, 04:02 PM I also had a reflash in the fall. My VIN is 1GCJK39274E271716. Do I have the latest?
Thanks
Cobra#3747 03-18-2005, 04:11 PM I thought it would give the release date on the calibration menu, but it dosnt, I may still be able to find out. If I had to guess, I would say that you have the latest, since I see only 1 update, but not sure on the release date.
camping350 03-19-2005, 09:10 PM :help: i had to take mine in for running rough at 185 degrees they said the reflash would take care of it. my question is why all of a sudden after 8000 miles does it need it
freddyo 03-20-2005, 12:30 AM Cobra#3747 -
My VIN is 1GTHK29214E268643. I have reflashed with last fall's reflash release. As far as I know there is only one for this truck - which I applied.
Thanks.
Cobra#3747 03-21-2005, 08:50 AM looking at the cal numbers, I think there is only the one released for the smoke and rough idle
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 08:21 AM just took mine in yesterday for the flash, told them white smoke at idle and rough idle while in gear, said they couldnt do anything for me as GM had this under investigation.
any thoughts on this?
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 09:25 AM Just got a call from the dealership.
they stated that there is a bullitin out dated Dec 17, 2004, # pip3256A
said that it supersedes the reflash issue dated around Sep 04 ?
Any techs out there want to chime in on this?
thanks
Cobra#3747 03-22-2005, 10:09 AM Do you have egr codes? I would look at the second PI I listed. They wont just try the reflash for you?

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.
Condition/Concern:
Vehicle may be brought in for SES or MIL light on. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the technician may find EGR DTCs P0401 or P0404.
Recommendation/Instructions:

Complete the proper SI diagnostics for the DTCs found.
If normal SI diagnostics have been completed and were inconclusive, inspect for any exhaust, air intake, or wiring harness modifications made to the vehicle. Condition/Concern:
Customer concern may be a low speed surge (8 to 10 mph or near 1000 RPM), acceleration fuel knock noise at 1700 to 1800 RPM, rough idle, white smoke at idle, or high positive injector balance rates.
Recommendation/Instructions:

High positive injector balance rates (over +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive) may be causing white smoke at idle or while driving.
Document all injector cylinder balance rates at the beginning of the diagnosis.
There is an updated calibration to address the white smoke, high positive balance rates, idle surge, and a fuel knock noise at or near 1700 to 1800 RPM.
Install the updated calibration and evaluate the smoking, high injector balance rates, idle surge, and fuel knock noises.
If there is still a mechanical concern with an injector, and balance rates are still over the SI specification of +4.0 in park or +6.0 in drive, replace only the effected injector.
NOTE: Before any injector replacements, a large fuel sample should be taken from the fuel filter and checked for contaminants or poor quality.

ssduramax 03-22-2005, 10:23 AM they said they couldn't do anything while there was an investigation by GM going on.
I did not get any lights on the dash but no telling what kind of codes are in there that didn't come up on the dash.
by the way, i have not hooked up the Predator to the truck yet and i have taken the egr plate off for the trip to the dealer.
Cobra#3747 03-22-2005, 11:30 AM Thats stupid, find someone else to do it. You dont have any light or EGR codes that is all that PI is for, does not say they cant reflash it.
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 12:10 PM thanks, thats what i thought. is there a good dealer up in Baltimore? I am down in Arlington.
Cobra#3747 03-22-2005, 12:29 PM I am up in Timonium, about 20-30 min north of Baltimore. Not real sure on how anyone else is in the area. Findind guys that dont mind working on Diesels is the real problem, they will do what ever they can to get away from them. Like here, its me and one other guy that will even touch them for the most part, everyone else runs and hides.
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 12:35 PM i just talked to another service writer, asked him about the PIP they gave me, he talked a bunch of cr**. then i asked him if the tech had written anything about checking the injector balance and he himhawed around the subject.
think i need to go down there after the tech gets back from lunch.
by the way, this is supposed to be the only dealer around here that has a diecel tech, 17 miles west of D.C. (Dudley Martin I believe).
Cobra#3747 03-22-2005, 12:39 PM Crap keeps up here, they will be one more short in the area...lol
Doing a reflash is not going to hurt anything and just maybe for a new idea, it might actually fix something, not that we would want anything like that to happen.
ssduramax 03-22-2005, 12:45 PM :) thanks for the help.
just for sh**s and giggles, does it cost anything but time to do the reflash?
Cobra#3747 03-22-2005, 01:27 PM All you use is the Tech II and a computer to download. Cost of the tech to do it, but they also get paid by GM to do it.
