: Bizarre speedometer problem
jim_bo 10-28-2008, 10:27 PM My speedometer has begun sticking such that 90mph acts as zero. As I speed up, the needle goes up from there. I found that if I shut the engine off and restart it several times, it makes it slowly work its way back to zero. WTF??? Has anyone seen this before?
Cluster has failed, very common, have a look around here there is a special policy from gm that may allow you to have it replaced free, a sticking speedo is a classic example of the issue.
phunhawg98 10-30-2008, 07:44 PM or go online and buy the stepper motors(i got miune from fleebay)with a couple of dash lights was around 30$shipped to my house and was very simple to solder in/out,fleebay dealer even provided directions on hwere to set the needles back to.

Even out of warranty?
heymccall 11-01-2008, 12:21 PM IIRC, the special policy 7/70 on cluster failures has not been updated to cover the 2005 and newer trucks. But I have been wrong before.
mah2092 11-04-2008, 11:19 PM What about a speedo that is sporadic? Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I am passing people on the hi way and the speedo says 20 MPH. How does the computer get its info on speed? I ran over some debri that did some damage to the underside and maybe I missed this particular prob. Is is a sensor that I can look for first?

Which truck has the problem?
BTW, all the fullsize GM 4x4s use a hall effect sensor mounted to (through) the transfer case. 2wd trucks have the same sensor mounted to the transmission tailshaft. When simply looking for the sensor, the wire from the plug is twisted throughout it's run and consists of only two wires.
If you're a good customer at the dealer, even if you're aren't covered by the cluster special policy for some reason, they may be able to help you out and goodwill you a new cluster.
Had the same problem on my 04 gasser 2wd that i had. At the time they would not cover it because i had 40k on the clock, and they wanted 450 for a new one. I had a interceptor scan gauge that was used as the speedo. I hear that GM is standing behind them now. Thats good to hear.

Yes. they are covering it now-- including the gasser. If you paid for the repair, they might even refund some $$. Talk to the dealer.:)
MbpsychoMax 11-06-2008, 08:00 PM Mine does the same thing ..........including no oil pressure too , going in next week
BadDury4x4 11-06-2008, 08:58 PM Mine has been starting from as high as 20mph and eventually working its way down...

mah2092 11-07-2008, 11:32 PM My 05 is having the problem. Probably heading to the dealer in Castroville Monday. They have been pretty good to me so far.............with the small problems.
MankesMax 12-16-2008, 05:33 PM Hey guys,
My dealer said it was covered on the 02-04 models and not my 05 model. Said they'd "see what they could do" to cover part of the cost. I've done a lot of reading on all other threads. One guy emailed someone at corp. GM and they took care of him.
I emailed that same email address this past Friday and haven't heard back.
Any suggestions on how to get them to goodwill my faulty speedo? Is there in fact a bulletin or any verbage from GM covering the newer 05+ models?
Thanks!

I just looked up the bulletin, and it does only cover 2003-2004 models. I thought the special policy covered 05 and 06 too, but apparently not. If you're a good customer, they will probably goodwill it for you.
snavely2 12-17-2008, 02:02 PM Went into the stealership today and was informed they will only cover it if there is less then 70k on the clock. Which is no help for me, im at 90k :(

Yes, but as I said, if you're a good customer they might be willing to goodwill it for you (or if you go and do some other stuff like fluid services, alignment, etc.).
jim_bo 12-18-2008, 08:30 PM OK, I just talked to the dealer and they told me they would not cover my 05 truck. Does anyone have any info concerning expanding the recall to cover 05s???
