So my front right wheel bearing went out today, and i got the joy of spending 325 bucks on a new one. It was easy to fix, it only took about 45 mintues but it mad me mad.

Why did it make you mad? You can't expect long bearing life with larger and heavier wheels/tires.

JOKERGERM

Yea i know but i was just suprised when i went to rotate my tires and the front wheel bearing was about to fall off.

And it was 325 bucks

I agree! $325 is a ton of cash for a bearing.

Napa's best wheel bearing cost me $259 including Mass. sales tax. Did both sides after discovering passenger side was really shot. $325 is a little pricey. Be thankful you did it yourself, imagine what the dealer would have cost?

You think you got burned... I put 4 new tires on last week and had them do the alignment. During the inspection I had 1-2 inch play in my front drivers side bearing and 1 inch in passenger side. They quoted me $489 plus $98 install per side. Now that's highway robbery... I was in a position that I was unable to fix the problem myself and talked the guy down to $329 plus $98 per side.... I am still felling the pain... A reach around should have been included in the price.... DO YA FEEL BETTER NOW?

I hate that when you are in one of those postions. I had to have bell Tire put on a wheel bearing and a new pitman arm on my old s-10 to the tune of 550$ because I did not have a garage or tools at the time to do it myself...

Wooow! Maybe the front end weight along with larger wheels and tirers wears them out. Do we have a thread for changing these gold bearings? I've heard they are a sealed bearing.

And, lazy me (no pictures), I hid this on here, in post #7 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146597&highlight=another+soft+brake

which is how to maintain the brake components while you're in there, BUT, make sure to inspect/ maintain the rear brakes, too.

Why read that??? Read Post #6 here http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215233&highlight=bearing

Sup guys?
I have a low growning sound when I am cornering @ 35-45 mph. I suspected a wheel bearing, but threw it up on the lift and have zero play top to bottom and left to right. When my 02 Max bearing went out, I had 1" or so of play and made it obvious. So, I am kinda baffled not to find any play.............

28000 miles

Thanks

I just did my front driver sides. Costed my 320 from Napa.

I had a pretty gnarly vibration at highway speeds. There was about 1/16" - 1/8" of play on the lugs. I hope you guys who had inches of play are speaking from the tires perspective. I dont even understand how it could possibly move that much in the housing.

I have had to replace left & right bearings on my 04 2500 HD. I use this truck like a car. No off road- no towing etc. My point is this is the only vehicle I have ever owned that required said part replacement.HD I do not think so.

Are the timken hubs any better than one from napa etc? My driverside has just a hair of play so it's time to go.

Man, for what I have into the tierods, braces, pitman/idler arms, and now the hub It's half the cost of a 4-6 lift. Oh well, for 84k miles I guess it's not that bad.

02-14-2009, 01:40 PM
Wow, you guys are replacing them with low miles. My 03 just had one go at 256k, was groaning and prolly due to the MVP plow the last 2 seasons and now 315's. I replaced both of them, dealer items.

I just replaced mine last week,,,it was bad, i rolled the head off one bolt and had to cut it off with a torch, so I heated the rest so that would not happen again.
Make sure you use a gooooood socket.

I have 146K miles on mine and only the drivers has gone out, I am going to replace the passenger with tax return. That is only to be on the safe side for the next three years, ok maybe six. I only drive mine 5K a year since the tow truck is always in the driveway!

Stealer did one on a buddy of mine......$700.00 for one side. He told me the quote and I said go get the truck and the parts and we'll do it in the parking lot for free. $250 for parts.... $6.00 for beer... 45 min later and a big savings.

Consider yourself lucky you gotta good deal on that component. Up here in the great white north those wheel bearing hugs (front) are $575.00 CAD = $405.00 USD + applicable taxes. My drivers side just went out this past week at 85,000 miles = 142,000 klms.......SWH...

Mind me asking if you've gotten more than a one year warranty?

Not that I'm kicking Timken, mind you, but I figure if Timken is OEM and it's the OEM part failing at 85-100k miles and are not covered under any warranty, any other hub assembly that meets OEM specs which provides a lifetime warranty would be an improvement. Plus, one can replace both assemblies and have a L.W. on both for the cost of one assembly from other retailers with a 90 day to one year guarantee.

As stated, "I see no sense making owning these rigs more expensive than need be...."

Keith

Dangblastit! some goodhearted someone oughta buy them for you from the USofA and ship them to you there in Canada. Cost per hub + shipping would be significantly less than $400, I would think. Less expensive hugs are always welcome....:D

Yeah, the lifetime warranty model is $220, same thing, I figure they are just playing the odds like an insurance company.

I like the lifetime warranty idea, if the company will be around in a couple years to honor it. My only concern is that they will fail at an inopprotune time. But with the two-for-one price, I can keep my good pass side around just in case.

Did your order one from them? If so, how does it look?

i here ua,...... i had to do them on my truck last summer. being i didn't want to go pick them up locally i got some from a site vender, silly thing is i clicked a few too many times at check out and ended up buying 2 sets. at first i was upset but i figure if i keep them around the shop some day they will save me all the pain of needed them at the last min. cores now a days i dont drive so much maybe i should sell em. thats a lot of beer money iv got tied up in new parts haah.......

i wish someone would develop a traditional style wheel bearing conversion for our trucks. or at least make it so we could service our hubs and just replace the bearing it self.

iv worked in imports that have a hub similar to our trucks only u can press out and in the parts that make up the hub bearing system making them less money to keep on the road.

Yes, I did and the local parts house tried matching the price (MacAuto's price was $119.95+shipping when I ordered) but the local parts supplier wouldn't warranty it for more than a year, so Mac got my business.

It fit perfectly and with no glitches in the ABS as well.
