Okay, here's what it is:
2000 Ford F550 super duty with the 7.3...
This happened pulling no load...
Hauling nothing....in other words bare truck zipping down the highway at 65mph
(Truck owned by a customer of mine)
Damage estimate = $9400 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
Transmission got a piece of the action too...
What caused this? No one knows.....
Felt a little vibration, then an earth shattering kaboom http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
If i can, I'll get a pic of the front output yoke and reluctor wheel...pretty wild looking..

PG- the leaf springs kinda gave it away, that ford sure had one hackuva appetite!!! Patrick, we had a guy here get asked by a game commisioner about the rifle sitting next to him on the tailgate of his truck while he was eating lunch last deer season if it was loaded, he said "of course not" loudly as he grabbed it to open the bolt to prove his point just as he shot through the back of his cab, the seat, the inst. cluster, the main fuse box, the left battery.... you get the idea....

Maybe got left in 4X4?? Had something similar happen to a friend's Ford, I did'nt see it but it was described to me. We had been at the sand dunes all weekend, and that truck was in and out of 4X4 a few times. My buddies wife was driving it home when "All of a sudden BOOOM!! and the truck was on fire". They some how managed to put out the fire with water left from ice in the icechest. The indicator in the dash said it was back in 2X4, but it was decided that the problem was it staying in 4X4.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confuzeld.gif

TEXMudder

Yes the Supers only have 2 front leafs. The 550 would have what is refered to as the X springs (higher rating than 250/350).

That is very impressive. I bet there is a stain on the seat.
I am guessing the chain broke loose first.

I am guessing the chain broke loose first. Nah, you'd have to know brian (the owner of the truck) There isn't much that shakes him...
The chain was in 1 piece still...

last time I saw T case like that was back in mid 80's. Farmer's truck got towed in with lower half of case hanging by the chain. He said in that particular 40 acre field there was only 1 stump and danged if he didn't find it the hard way.

UPDATE:
Well, the truck is back together....Or, at least it was...
The owner of this thing came to work today..The look on his face was enough to make a frieght train take a dirt road.....
Completely unrelated to the transfercase incident....
Motor lost a cylinder this morning...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
Needless to say, the owner is pissed...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif
and, the truck is heading to the auction next week..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
