: Aurora 5000?
On a built motor what kind of boost would a guy be looking at running? I'm looking for 800hp.
I know the 5000 is a proven charger for pulling etc. But how streetable is it? Is it comparable to the stock vvt as far as lag and boost threshold?
Basically looking for something thats going to make big hp and drag race but still be able to take it for friday night cruises.
Grey Ghost 10-26-2008, 04:04 AM My son has one in his '03 2500. It is very streetable. It's all about the tuning.
Your best bet, IMHO, is to have an ECM w/DSP5 setup. That would be the quickest way to switch from steet to track to etc....

jrad12381 10-26-2008, 11:06 AM I am interested in this is well. Keep the responses coming.
I originally was excited about doing a twins setup. But having one big blower would be alright as well and would save me a bit of money too.
I'm not sure about the DSP5 thing, not a bad idea though. I think I'm going to go the Roadrunner ECM route, I don't think they support the DPS do they?
I've got a feeling once the motor moves a bit more air through aftermarket heads/cam and with the addition of some headers that the 5000 would be a decent option even for street performance but I like to hear what guys have to say.
Steezey 10-26-2008, 02:26 PM I have been in many trucks with a 5000. Great set up. Get the tuning right, and even if you get your trans to shift a little bit later to keep it in the RPM's then you will never even think about it.
The 5000 will reach 25 PSI something like .7 seconds slower then the stock turbo. But with good tuning and up-pipes and headers I bet it will spool up better then stock.
trentnell 10-26-2008, 02:44 PM not to nock the a5k but I think being on a t3 pedistal is its weekness, if I already had a t3 ped then I would def chose the a5k but with a built motor I would go with a gt 42 or anything equivalent on a t4 pedistall the spool is comparable and the gt 42 will out perform the a5k.at 800 horse I think you need bigger than the a5k
jrad12381 10-26-2008, 02:54 PM I am curious about the ATS 5000 street performance, for somewhat of a daily driver. Who here has experience tuning these to optimize street performance and what type of power would one of these make on a single cp3?
duramaxsandwich 10-26-2008, 03:12 PM driving on the street w/ the a5k is easy. it's just easy to bark. on my truck i had to watch it when my torque converter locks or it would bark every time @ part throttle. i drove my truck 40 miles one way to school and back on numerous occasions and a couple long trips on the interstate. it ran great.
6speedduramax 10-26-2008, 03:26 PM Mine has never barked at all. The turbo does preform very well at sled pulling, I think its just a little laggy for me having a manual trans. If anyone is interest in buying one mines for sale :D. Was just rebuilt!!
paint94979 10-26-2008, 03:26 PM A5K.... why? There are many turbos far superior to this turbo. This turbo was released what 3+ years ago? It is a T-3 Pedistal.... longevity is hit or miss.... For HALF the price you can get a nice S400 custom built for you.... which would be a T-4 Pedistal.... The A5k is out played and inferior. When it was released it was the benchmark any will agree with that but do more research ask questions....
jrad12381 10-26-2008, 03:41 PM I was just curious as to its popularity. I am going with twins on my truck but I have seen some a5k for sale for cheap.

Exactly
Paint... you sound chapped that I asked the question.
I don't know much about pedistals.. so whats the difference between the T3 and T4?

t-4 is a larger pedistall wich will flow more exhaust into the turbo, and you shouldnt regret asking question we all have learned everything we know about trucks, life, and everything in between by asking questions , and learning from others .
CurtisEmery 10-26-2008, 07:20 PM T4 is a larger higher flowing design.
600+duramax 10-26-2008, 07:35 PM I have had the 5000 on my truck for about 3 years I have nothing bad to say about this charger it is probably the best all around charger on the market. When I say best all around I mean as a charger to do everything tow, race, pull and drive on a everyday basis. My 5000 does not bark on the shifts or when the converter locks up. I think it has a lot to do with the tunning.
Perfect. Thanks for the replies.
So where can I get the specs on the ATS A5K to compare with Garret's or BorgWarner or anything else. I checked thier website, but I suck at navigating websites for information.
What is the equivalent Ball Bearing unit from Garrett that was talked about with the T4 pedestal?
trentnell 10-26-2008, 08:22 PM if you are ready to purchase i would talk some experts there are many option thats will effect the comparison, wheel sizes a/r ect. pm sent

The 5000 is a Borg warner turbo. It has a 71mm wheel on the compressor side. I think a turbo with a t4 pedestal in a 71mm wheel will have more lag. I could be wrong though?

the A/R has a lot to do with it.
