I got my answer the hard way. Back in the summer I remember reading posts were guys were asking if GM made a factory remote for the 2007 Classic Duramax trucks and no one could say whether this was available or not.
Well I had a aftermarket stater on a 2004 Duramax so I thought why not just put one on my truck now, since No One could tell me for sure about a GM model. So now I have a Compu-star and it works good but it makes my "Check Engine Light" come on.
Went to the dealer today and they checked the truck to see if indeed the starter was making the light come on and it is. The dealer claims that because you can get a GM starter for the Classic trucks he thinks the trucks computer is only compatible with a GM starter. Well who knows if this is true. I have call in to the installer of the Compu star unit to see why the starter is making the light come on.........I can only imagine what answer he will give..........

Trust me the compustar can be made to work. The installer overlooked something that's all.
Do you know the code? I can likely pinpoint the problem with the code.
THe code should have been cleared and see if it came back.
I am sooo sick of stealers narrow minded view. I wouldn't take my truck to a stealer for so much as an oil change. Fed up I tells ya! :D

The codes are a PO650 and a PO381.
The Dealer says that document #2030531 explains the problem? They said they cleared the code, tryed the starter and the code came back and the light came on.

#PIP3603B: Diesel Engine Equipped Vehicles With P0381 And P0650 - keywords 6.6 diesel glow glowplug indicator instrument LBZ light LLY LMM P0381 P0650 panel plug start wait - (Oct 16, 2007)
Subject: Diesel Engine Equipped Vehicles With P0381 and P0650

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
The dealer may encounter a customer concern of a SES light with the Wait to Start Control Circuit DTC P0381 or P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit found.
Recommendation/Instructions:
If the DTC P0381 code cannot be duplicated, and it's only found as a history code, clear the DTC and evaluate the concern.
Engineering has been involved and investigated P0381/P0650 codes.
In most cases DTCs P0381 and P0650 will occur after a repair, during a radio upfit, an add-on dash switch modification, or upfitting of other aftermarket components.
For GMT900 Light Duty Trucks:
If P0381 and P0650 have set together after some type of electrical or under-dash repair, clear the DTCs and verify they do not reset after cleared. If the PC is unplugged and the key is cycled once you will set P0650. If the key is cycled a second time P0381 will be set along with P0650. If the power feed to the IPC is lost both P0381 and P0650 may set.
If DTC P0381/P0650 was not set before initial repair/modification, and only starting setting after repairs were completed, the repair needs to be rechecked. Connections and wiring to IPC (instrument panel cluster) should be inspected and repaired. If modification was made to original wiring harness it needs to be removed and setting of DTCs evaluated.
If P0650 is set by itself and was the original vehicle concern, complete the current SI diagnostics. ECM replacement is not suggested for P0650 set by itself. ECMs returned and inspected by engineering have been found no trouble found. Most P0650 codes have been repaired by either a wiring or IPC repair.
For GMT560 Medium Duty Trucks:
If P0381 has set after some type of electrical repair, center console repair, or under-dash repair clear the DTCs and verify they do not reset after cleared.
If DTC P0381 was not set before initial repair/modification, and only starting setting after repairs were completed, the repair needs to be rechecked. Connections and wiring to IPC(instrument panel cluster) should be inspected and repaired. If modification was made to original wiring harness it needs to be removed and setting of DTCs evaluated.
If P0381 is set by itself and was the original vehicle concern, complete the current SI diagnostics. ECM replacement is not suggested for P0381 set by itself. ECMs returned and inspected by engineering have been found no trouble found. Most P0381 codes have been repaired by either a wiring or IPC repair.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

That's a new one to me. I guess your installer is going to have to check his connections and try disconnecting the glow plug wire if it is hooked up. He will definately need a code reader to clear the codes to know where he is at.
Good luck. Work with your installer. The stealer will rape you if you get them to fix it.
**Edit** I see you are in Alberta. I hope you're not dealing with Southgate chevrolet in Calgary. IF you are RUN!

I don't fully understand it myself and as I said I have never run across this. It looks like either the installer did something wrong or the compustar is possibly interfering the the wire to the cluster. Most likely either the glow plug wire or the tach connection. It could be for example drawing to much from the circuit and causing it to throw a code. I'm not sure if it's an installer error or a compustar issue. Either way the installer is likely best to look over his connections, try isolating which circuit (wire) is causing the problem and perhaps call compustar to get their opinion because they most likely have run into it before.

I suspect that it is the Glow Plug conection. I just tryed the key and the glow plug warm up light does not come on in the dash. Truck may still be warm. It has been parked for 3 1/2 hours?????
Anyway thanks!

Well you guys were right, most of this problem can be directly attributed to dealer bullshit and Audio Company that really does care about it's customers.
Why did I believe a dealer in the first place.........anyway it is fixed!:D
