: Banks Big Head Boost
dangerzone 03-17-2005, 02:23 PM I read in Truck trend that their truck with the Banks Big head was getting 32psi boost Is this correct? I am only showing 19-20psi under the hardest load pulling my 14,000lb trailer. What is stock boost? What should the boost be with the Banks Big Head? What is the highest boost you can run on the motor before causing damage?
fredw 03-17-2005, 02:53 PM i run about up to 23 psi with the stock tune on a aftermarket intake and 4 "exhaust.
with a large tune or big stack that will go up to 28psi boost, since i added the bighead, i now will go up to 32psi with spikes to 36, you will find quicker spoolup with the bighead as well, in a stock setup i do not think the bighead will do much over the stock actuactor
m2r2s 03-17-2005, 03:40 PM 32 psig would not be hard to believe with the Banks Big Head actuator. I easily get to 25 psig. I don't know how much higher than that it goes since the Attitude does not go much higher than 25 psig for Boost and I usually back off when boost gets to 25 psig.
Scotty Seelen 03-17-2005, 04:28 PM I did a full throttle run the other day on level 2. The boost went up to 22psi. I haven't tried the other levels, as I've just installed the boost and egt gauges.
weekilty 03-17-2005, 05:02 PM At full Throttle I am boosting at 25.6psi
That is with
Exhaust, Intake & Edge
moss022 03-17-2005, 05:19 PM 25.6 is all the edge will read, it may be higher
Got Juice? 03-17-2005, 05:21 PM At full Throttle I am boosting at 25.6psi
That is with
Exhaust, Intake & Edge
Yes the attitude 'Boost Fools" the ECM to prevent a check engine overboost code so the attitude only displays that as the maximum. (Basically 'clips' the boost signal voltage output ((Whatever the 25.6PSI Voltage is the eq value of))so not to set a DTC code)
You NEED a MECHANICAL gauge to measure any boost above 25 PSIGA at the MAP sensor guys!
Elowe65 03-17-2005, 05:21 PM Stock everything 20-22 psi
W/edge 90hp, predator 120,
Stock WG 26-28psi never hit 30psi
Stock WG blocked hose 36-42psi easily if not more would move the needle back to 0 on a 0-35psi gauge.
W/big head 30-32 slight spike to 34 in extreme cases and easily adjusted.
bigblackdmax 03-17-2005, 06:13 PM With the stock wastegate and the no tunes I hit about 22 psi and with the edge on 5 I hit about 28.
dangerzone 03-17-2005, 06:39 PM I Guess My Real Question Is With The Banks Six Gun And Speed Loader And Big Head 4" Exhaust Afe Stage 2 Are My Boost Readings Normal Or Do I Need To Readjust My Big Head? Also Is There A Stack Or Any Way To Eliminate The Speed Limiter?
Elowe65 03-17-2005, 07:54 PM yes, they seem low, while towing what rpm were you at?? Did it downshift??
All else being fine, it sounds like the big head needs adjustment if you wish to achieve higher boost pressures.
As for the limiter, I use a Predator unit for raising the speed limiter. There are few tuners out there that will do this without installing a "tune" or stack in the truck.
Duratys 03-17-2005, 07:59 PM Does the 6gun werk same as edge...........in that it will only show a certain amt of boost?
Scotty Seelen 03-18-2005, 08:05 AM Elowe65,
I see you've got a regular Juice, Predator and 6-gun with speedloader. What are your thoughts on each tuner and what combination of stacks have you tried?
Duratys,
Right now, only analog gauges are available for the 6-gun, so it'll show whatever boost you're running. I don't think there is enough information yet on their new unit to answer your question on maximum boost display.
dangerzone,
You can buy a programmer like the Predator or Bullydog to remove the speed limiter without adding a horsepower program. However, I believe Banks will be working on a "black box" to remove the speed limiter-that may save you some money instead of buying a programmer.
Elowe65 03-18-2005, 12:27 PM I stack the 65hp predator with either the edge 90hp or the banks on L6 along with LP on 30% all the time. I swap between the edge and the banks depending on where I’m going. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Driving around town (more less stop and go) I like the edge, only problem with the edge is it smokes a ton (with or without LP, of course more with LP). <o:p></o:p>
If I'm heading to Vegas or any good highway drive, I install the banks. <o:p></o:p>
Reason for this is the transmission is stock still and I could push harder with the banks installed. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The only issue I have had is with the banks. It always seems to burst (if that’s what it’s called) at 15psi. At 15psi it "feels" like it goes from 5psi to 25psi instantly. Slowly rolling into the throttle like trying to go from 50mph to 70mph, boost pressure climbs somewhat slow up to 14psi, right at 15psi, the truck pulls really hard and the gauge will shoot up to 20psi in a flash (all with the same throttle input). It will stay up there until I back the throttle off (fun, but no fun with a stock tranny as usually anything above 20psi when in 5th will limp her for sure). <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Other issue I have had with the banks is anytime I squeeze the truck, I'll trip the banks limp protection and lose the banks until I shutdown and restart. I usually squeeze with the edge anyway as there seems to be more fuel with it.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Also, I really feel no difference from level 2 to level 6 with the banks. Never have, so I just leave it on 6 all the time. Just for reference, this is their version 2 unit. It is my understanding that they now have a version 3 more designed for race but only ship production units with version 2.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
As for dealing with the company, I have had no issues with banks customer service. I had some small issues with the exhaust, and they took care of that right away without question. Seems that with other businesses, the customer service rep has attitude issues but I guess that changes depending if you’re in the "known" with them from what I gather here on the board. To me it seems banks take care of their customers the same way whether they know you or not.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
All in all, I like the banks better than my edge as my old edge is not "on the fly" adjustable compared to the banks that is. I know that could be changed with the attitude so no real big deal, just my preferences at the moment.<o:p></o:p>
Scotty Seelen 03-18-2005, 12:54 PM It's interesting that you don't notice much of a difference between level 2 through level 6. I feel that there is a noticable difference between all of the settings.
Duratys 03-18-2005, 03:39 PM Ive only found that touchy throttle to be in levels 5& 6 alll others are smooth. Cruise control is the ****$ with level 6. For some reason level 5 wont "burst"as Elowe stated above when u use it on cruise(weird.............hell ya). big dif between all settings here as well
