: Exhaust and intake changes
dncasey 03-17-2005, 05:25 AM I have an 04.5 Silverrado 2500HD d/max with 20k miles in 7 months of daily 2 hour commutes to work. I plan to add the MBRP T304 exhaust and AFE stage II intake this weekend. No plans for a chip. I have read many threads about error codes and EGR blockers, ect. Will I get error codes with the changes I am making or not? Cannot afford to be stuck beside the road.
Fingers 03-17-2005, 06:29 AM The codes will not shut you down. Make the changes you want and if it codes, buy the cure.
dncasey 03-17-2005, 08:00 AM Sorry to sound dumb, but what is the cure?
Biterman 03-17-2005, 09:19 AM If you yank the Kitty, you may get an EGR code. If you block the EGR, you WILL get an EGR code. Look up Finger stick on this forum and you will find an inexpensive (+/-$20) block for this code. OR you can get ahold of PPE and pay $220.00 for the same fix.
dncasey 03-17-2005, 10:00 AM Thanks for the info

Is there a thread that discusses the PPE solution? I am not familiar.
Mark Craig 03-18-2005, 09:54 AM dncasey,
More than likely if you remove the cat and muffler you will get a engine light on an LLY. The EGR is expecting a slight amount of back pressure at idle, when you remove that the light goes "BLING". The "FINGER" fix is an electronic circuit that you wire into the EGR harness that fools the EGR into "seeing" back pressure at idle. Viola you get a full exhaust system and no light!!!
Call us if you have any questions we'll get you the answers.

Mark @ DPPI The light may depend on what emissions you have. I know if you have CA emissions the light will come on. If you have fed emisssions the light may not come on but that doesn't me you haven't set a code. Get the finger stick and EGR blocker plate. This soot going back into the engine just doesn't look like it is good for ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif. The intake manifolds look like they are exhaust manifolds with the EGR in action.
rwagner64 03-18-2005, 12:08 PM The first mods I did were the AFE Stage II and the 4" Banks Monster Exhaust, no problems with the mods ( I left the cat were it was). I think I have a better throttle response. Now I have Banks Six Gun and Speed-Loader.
marks66 03-18-2005, 05:00 PM I am planning to add an AFE stage II intake on my new 2004.5 LLY. I don't want to change the exhaust. Will I get any improvment or problems with just the intake modification?
bergeros 03-18-2005, 09:37 PM rwagner64, what is the sound like? when you put the banks 4inch did you get rid of the muff or leave it in. I want to straight pipe the muff only but am afraid it will be too ofensive. Don't want to mess with the kitty for fear emissions in MA will catch up with me...thoughts anyone??
dncasey 03-19-2005, 07:21 PM I had the exhaust and AFE intake installed today. Sounds great with the cat gone and the stock MBRP muffler. No codes yet. Lots of attention from other trucks including a big dump truck on the large rolled exhaust extension. Love it.
rwagner64 03-19-2005, 09:07 PM You can hear it in the cab but is not offensive, I went with the banks monster exhaust (muffler included). Just at 5 bills from the Cat back.
dncasey 03-21-2005, 07:51 PM Anyone have the 04.5 + Activator module installed on there diesel? The shop that installed the intake and exhaust had the first one available in NC. It has a dial in the cab to change the boost. He said you need the guage set also. I dont want to be the first to try it out. The MBPR exhaust and AFE intake are working great.

Vertical-escape 03-21-2005, 10:23 PM Don't waist your money on an intake kit as these will only add very, very small ponies. Add a better stock replacement filter and spend your money on a better exhaust. You'll get waaaaaaaayyyyy more bang for your hard earned buck! If you don't want noice, just do a cat back and you'll hardly be able to tell the diff on noice level. Take the kitty off and you'll love it!
bobbss 03-22-2005, 10:51 AM Can anybody tell me if it changes the way the truck runs or hurts anything if it sets a code from changing the exhaust? Thanks!
Mark Craig 03-23-2005, 10:59 AM marks66,
Yes you will get a quicker spool up on the turbo, better sound too! HP isn't a ton, but you have prepped the truck for future mods like a van Aaken or Edge or Predator. If you don't want to change exhaust be preppared for some higher EGT's than with an exhaust change. Some customers report a MPG improvement with any intake as well. We are a believer in the Pro Guard 7 System from AFE as they flow but keep the dirt out. Give us a call if you have nay questions we'll be glad to help.

dncasey 03-23-2005, 04:12 PM My MPG has increased 1.5 miles/gal with the intake and MBPR exhaust. I am getting about 22.5 MPG on the computer with mostly highway driving around 60 MPH. I am thinking about adding the Activator module. The sound of the new mods is great.
