: Trailer size and fuel economy question
Tony_V 10-22-2008, 01:02 PM I have to make a 1400 mile trip and the junk I have to move will not all fit into the bed of my Sierra. I have a 6x12 box trailer that is about 7'6" high. The trailer is not heavy at all (3000lbs loaded) but its profile is large enough so that I only get around 11MPG towing at the speeds I like to go. And this trailer is way bigger than I need for this trip. Empty the truck gets around 16.5.
I am trying to find out if anyone tows a small profile trailer 4' wide, 5' high (like a Uhaul 4x8 single axle) and what their fuel economy is. I can rent one of these from Uhaul for $45 and if my math is correct 13 MPG or better and it would be worth it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

woodchuck2 10-22-2008, 07:49 PM I tow my 14' V-nose loaded everyday and i get 12-13mpg around town. Seems like you should get a little better. Try slowing down some and see what the milage does.
tinypeckerwood 10-22-2008, 08:50 PM I have a similar size trailer(6x12) I got 12.5 on a 3400 mile trip. I was also hoping for better, but it was what it was. I kept the speed down too around 65-70 at the most.
jimmyjack1 10-23-2008, 04:02 PM ive towed my trailer with skid steer two buckets and forks which is around 13000#s just under 500 miles all highway in the mountains of upstate ny and avg 10.5mpg with my ppe on lvl5
JeffsJeep04 10-23-2008, 05:47 PM A bullnose trailer pulls a hell of a lot harder then a V nose, so that's probably your issue. Slowing down 5-10 mph will help your milage considerably. The u-hauls generally suck because they are flat in the front, but if your truck sticks up above you might be ok.
Renntag 10-23-2008, 09:49 PM I get 13.7 mpg towing 18,000# at what ever speed I can get to gradually up to 65mph.
Towing a 6x12 vee nose that is nearly 8' high, I still get nearly 15mpg.
If you only need to trailer one way, then go for the rental for convenience. If not, then slow down a bit and use your trailer round trip.
dube-dmax 10-27-2008, 04:59 PM 25' toy hauler about 8 - 9Klbs at 60MPH I get 10 - 11MPG. What I'm I doing wrong? Seems like you guys are getting pretty good MPG.
FYI: stock, no tuners, etc........
Plan on getting an 18K toy hauler soon. where will my milage go to now. I was originally hoping for 10 with 40'
f-wheel but only get that pulling 25' TH. OMG! does that mean I'll get like 8MPG now? I have 373 gears, do you guys suggest 410's? or maybe keep it out of overdrive whith 40' f-wheel? I'm totally scurd and hope mI'm not over doing it.
I know the truck, motor, tranny, rearend, etc is made for it, but what are the things I need to look out for? I hear guys moving the tranny cooler 4" to under the chevy emblem and it prevents the fan from comming on so often.
What do you think?
coachcollins42 10-30-2008, 07:03 PM I am getting 12mpg regularly towing my 35' 10000lb 5ver. Just got back from a 700 mile trip to north ga.
This past week I towed my skid steer about 130 miles up to northeast PA from my house into a 20-30 mph head wind and got a whole 7 miles to the gallon.
The truck never realized the wind was that bad but my fuel gauge definitely did.
Hopefully there will be a good tail wind when I tow it home next weekend.
bugthug 11-01-2008, 09:55 PM I plowed snow last week 121 miles 12 gallons of fuel . I know it isnt towing but I thank that is real good.
RickFox 11-02-2008, 01:41 AM I do quite a bit of 5th wheel traveling and average very close to 12 mpg on mostly stock truck. Recently added the Banks stuff but have not yet noticed any better mileage. When towing we are usually in the 20K to 21.5K GVWR.

tinypeckerwood 11-02-2008, 10:47 PM Just got home from draggin my 40' fiver from palm springs to ocatillo wells. weighed the combo thursday, Empty weight of combo was 22K. Loaded = 125 gals of water, 50 gals gas, 4 quads, 1 dirt bike, firewood, 5 Asses, and 1 pooch. All this and a headwind and slight uphill got me a total of 6 mpg.

So Tiny, you must have been in the upwards of 26K lbs loaded or more? OMG! So our duallies are rated for a max of 23.5k lbs. Did you take it out of OD? and what was your average speed? What gearing do you have?
I plan on getting a new 40-5er this weekend and not looking forward to the new MPG. I spoke to the San Diego CHP last week and the Commercial Officer told me that the few things they're looking for is speeders towing(max 55 in cal), Non-commercial Class "A" Lic. and they will weigh your truck looking for tires that are not rated for the weight. Drive axle only. My BFG AT's are rated for 3042K x (4) is 12,168lbs. Half my truck with fuel, (2) adult asses and (2) youth butts, and fiver hitch is aprx 4K lbs + hitch weight of 3K lbs (on the high side) 3k + 4K = 7K lbs on the drive axle. Way below the tire limit, but what about the total GCVWR? over 23.5K? The officer also told me that it's usually the 3/4 ton trucks with lift kits and tall tires that just don't have the ratings.
I understand that CHP is not looking for the GVCWR, but if you get into an accident with your total being higher that the max(owners manual) rated for the truck, your insurance will dump you like a pouder blue suit.
Any additional help would be nice.

The biggest thing I would watch for is not being over on your axle and/or tire weights. In the summer I also have a third trailer attached too. With that combo I am 72' long and weigh 27k. That weight is spread across 6 axles and 12 tires. I'm not so worried about what GM has issued for a weight rating. I just make sure I am not over weight on tires/axles. I have brakes on everything, and am licensed for everything that has rubber and touches the road. I have not had any issues in almost three years with this package. I just take it easy and watch the speed, and wave back at the Chippies.
