In the last 2 days I have noticed a problem with my gear selector lights. When I put it in "R"everse it lights up as it should, but when I put it in "N"eutral or "D"rive it does not light up. The letter D is still there but normally there is a square light around it. Has anyone had this problem before, and if so, how did you correct it? I am out of warranty so a cheaper way to fix it would be appreciated. :)
Thanks,
Jeff

start with the switch on the side of the trans (NSBU). Otherwise its probably something with the cluster.

Be sure to get the NSBU switch from an Allison Distributor as they are quite a bit cheaper than GM.

Ok, now my truck is stuck in 3rd gear and won't shift at all. Would this switch cause this as well? If so, where can I find the directions on how to change it?

Thanks,
Jeff

Yep the NSBU switch is the culprit. It is also covered under the 120,000? Emission warranty. Good luck convincing the dealer that though. If you have the warranty supplement manual it says it is covered. As was stated above if you have to pay for it out of your pocket, buy it from an Allison dealer. MUCH cheaper.

Well, I just dropped it off at the stealer and they will look at it tomorrow. I do have the supplement in the truck, I guess I will just wait and see what the stealer says is/was the problem if they fix it. They are supposed to do a diagnostic in the morning and if it is something simple they will fix and only charge me the hour labor. But if it is more then that they will call me. Just out of curiosity, how much is one of these NSBU switches, and how long does it take to change it out? They said it is $96 for the hour and that is the max they will charge me unless I tell them otherwise. So, if the NSBU switch is the culprit, then warranty should cover all charges including the diagnostic, correct?
Thanks
Jeff

I think the switch from Allison was around 50.00 and it is pretty easy to change. It's in the DIY section of the forum too I believe.

From GM it is probably well over $100. You will have to fight with them to get it under warranty. It will be the NSBU. It is definately covered under the emissions warranty but it's hard to find documantion saying it is.

Here is the thread discussing it. Let us know how you make out.

Some have reported paying almost $300 for it! Don't let them rob you.

Thanks MaxPower. I got the call from the service Dept. and they told me it is the NSBU switch and the total would cost me $355, but they need to order the part and it will be here on Monday. I quoted off some words from the link you sent and I actually sounded like I knew what I was talking about. She asked if I would like them to finish the work and I replied, only if you can do it under the warrenty I talked about, if not I will bring it to a dealer that will. She said she would try to look up that info under the emission section. I got a call about 10 minutes later and she said yes it is under warrenty and they would take care of it. Now, here is the funny part. I had already gotten a rental vehicle at the time I dropped off my truck and I paid for it until next Tuesday. I then asked her since this is under warrenty, how about my rental vehicle. She simply asked me what rental company I got it from and she called there and told them they were taking care of the entire bill. All I need to do is stop by there today and get my refund. :cool2: If they keep this up, they found a new customer. I am happy so far. Will keep you posted if anything changes. Thanks again,
Jeff

Good deal.

Just so you know they didn't have to cover the rental. GM won't pay for that out of the 3/36 from what I understand. Consider yourself lucky.

I have to agree, if you come out smelling like a rose let them know how happy you are and that they have a customer for life. You can't blame them for not knowing the switch was covered under emissions warranty to start with. Not many (if any) dealers know this.

I thought any warrenty work that was being done to the vehicle would automatically authorize you a rental, if it needed to stay overnight. I am not saying anything. I am really surprised on this whole thing. I have run into a lot of stealerships in my life, actually the service departments in general, that didn't care. The ones that did care seemed to be the ones in the quick oil change areas where you could somewhat talk to them as they worked on your vehicle. But the main service area was always, leave us the key and we will call you, and when the bill came or questions about a rental car they always go to a defensive mood. I know I simply stated I was new here in California because of the military and my parents just came in that day to visit me and my truck breaks down, well it locked up in 3rd gear about 20 miles from home. Driving 45 mph on the highway with flashers on really Censored . Anyway, I picked my parents up at the airport and now our whole weekend just got messed up, so I thought. But they told me to bring it in. I called a rental place in town and got the cheapest rental I could find. Then the next day I get the call from the service dept. and we talked a bit about the issues and then I asked if it is under warrenty will GM cover a rental? Then it just rolled out smooth from there. I am in Fairfield, CA and the dealership that I am with is called Woodard Chevrolet. They even told me my recall on the tailgate cables will be done before I pick it up.:ro)

Picked up the truck today. They must have reprogrammed the transmission because it shifted pretty hard on my way home. I will wait until I come home from work tomorrow and install the juice again. Thanks for the help everyone.

The rental is usually only covered by GM under the 3/36. The dealer themselves was picking up the tab on that rental.

I thought that any warrenty work would authorize you a rental if they kept it overnight. But, I'm not speaking any louder then this....:ro)

as long as it was under the 3/36, once it goes to the engine warranty with deductable, thats it. Sounds like a good place to go for your work. :cool2:
